The Boston Herald’s all-decade Eastern Mass. volleyball team consists of the area’s elite athletes over the last 10 years. Not surprisingly, Barnstable led the way with six honorees as well as the Coach and Player of the Decade.
COACH OF THE DECADE
Tom Turco, Barnstable
When you talk about dominant programs, Barnstable’s girls volleyball had better be in the equation. Head coach Tom Turco has built a dynasty of epic proportions. In this decade, Turco guided the Red Raiders to a 218-14 record with 10 Div. 1 South sectional titles, six Div. 1 state championships in seven trips to the finals and three state semifinal berths.
PLAYER OF THE DECADE
Riley James, Barnstable, 2015-2018
The only player in this decade to make the Boston Herald All-Scholastic girls volleyball team four times, James set a state record for kills in a career with 1,729. A two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, James was part of two Div. 1 state championship teams, tallying 510 kills and 441 digs in those two title campaigns.
After Barnstable: James just completed her freshman year at Bryant where she had 304 digs and 286 kills.
Athena Ardila, Weston, 2013-2016
A two-time Most Valuable Player in the Dual County League, the 6-foot outside hitter established state records for kills in one season (576) as well as career (1,642). A four-year starter, Ardila was part of four DCL championships.
After Weston: Ardila is a senior at Northeastern University. A three-year member of the volleyball team, she was an all-Colonial Athletic Association first-team selection in 2019.
Megan Armburg, Case, 2008-2012
The two-time team captain totaled 1,287 assists, 206 aces and 393 digs in her career. The Cardinals were 80-12 during Armburg’s time there, winning one Div. 3 title and reaching the state finals on two other occasions.
After Case: Armburg attended the University of South Florida for two years before transferring to Rhode Island College. In three seasons at RIC, Armburg competed in 73 matches and finished with 10 kills, 53 assists, 90 service aces and 848 digs.
Azita Bakhtyari, Andover, 2011-2014
A two-time MVP of the Merrimack Valley Conference, Bakhtyari recorded 1,443 assists, 248 digs, 190 kills and 121 blocks as the Golden Warriors went 22-2 and advanced to the Div. 1 state finals as a senior.
After Andover: Bakhtyari played at WPI from 2015-2019 where she amassed 2,506 assists and was a two-time Google Cloud Volleyball Academic All-American.
Brooke Bell, Melrose, 2009-2012
The senior setter recorded 595 assists and was named MVP of the Middlesex League as she helped guide Melrose to the Div. 2 state championship. The school’s career assist leader at the time of her graduation (1,856), Melrose won the Middlesex League title and reached at least the state semifinals in each of Bell’s four years on the team.
After Melrose: Bell attended Keene State where she spent three years on the volleyball team registering 1,295 assists and 535 digs.
Caroline Brodt, Barnstable, 2014-2017
Brodt led the state in assists with 765 as a senior, while adding 167 digs, 52 aces and 26 kills for the four-time, Division 1 South sectional champs. For her career, Brodt tallied 1,849 assists, 447 digs and 136 aces and was part of two Div. 1 state championship teams.
After Barnstable: Brodt is a sophomore on the volleyball team at Rochester Institute of Technology where she is majoring in advertising photography.
Olivia Brodt, Barnstable, 2011-2014
A standout setter, Brodt broke the school’s record for assists with 772 in 2013. Brodt ended her career with 1,443 assists and helped lead the Red Raiders to three Div. 1 state titles.
After Barnstable: Brodt attended Babson College and was a member of the volleyball team before passing away in April 2017 from rhabdomyosarcoma cancer. Her No. 3 was retired by Barnstable High later that year.
Jenn Cabral, Case, 2008-2011
A two-time South Coast Conference All-Star and member of three straight Div. 3 state finalist squads, Cabral had 186 kills from her outside hitter spot as a senior, giving her a career total of 558.
After Case: Cabral attended Worcester State University where she was one of the top players in school history. An all-MASCAC selection as a senior, Cabral was fourth all-time in kills (520) and second in digs (1,130) at the time of her graduation in 2015.
Kara Charette, Fairhaven, 2008-2011
A two-time All-Scholastic middle hitter, Charette broke the school record for kills in a career with 1,269. As a senior, she recorded 378 kills, 56 aces, 249 digs and 94 blocks in leading the Blue Devils to the Division 2 South sectional title.
After Fairhaven: Charette went on to have a stellar four-year career at Franklin Pierce, amassing 1,945 points and 687 rebounds.
Corinne Cox, Notre Dame Academy, 2012-2015
A two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, Cox played a key part in leading Notre Dame to the Div. 2 state title as a senior. Cox ended her career with 2,288 assists, 134 aces and 185 kills.
After Notre Dame: Cox played on the volleyball team for three years at Dartmouth College. She led the team in assists as a junior with 373.
Kayla Crook, Barnstable, 2009-2012
A three-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic, the standout setter helped guide the Red Raiders to three straight Div. 1 state titles. As a senior, Crook dished out 680 assists, including 54 in the state semifinals against Lincoln-Sudbury, ending her career with 2,023 assists.
After Barnstable: Crook majored in biomedical engineering at the University of Connecticut.
Kaylee Deluga, Barnstable, 2008-2011
As a senior, Deluga had 260 kills, 50 blocks, 32 aces and 150 digs as a key member of Barnstable’s 23-0 state championship group. A three-time Old Colony League and two-time All-State performer, Deluga registered 870 kills for career.
After Barnstable: Deluga began her collegiate career at Keene State before transferring to Lesley College, where she amassed 934 kills in three seasons.
Kaleigh Fitzgerald, Reading, 2006-2019
Fitzgerald played at Reading for just two years, but more than made an impact. She was a Div. 1 All-State performer in both seasons. Fitzgerald led her team to the Middlesex League title as a junior, finishing the season with 113 kills, 320 assists and 82 aces. She was named Middlesex League Liberty MVP after registering over 250 kills to go along with 47 aces.
After Reading: Fitzgerald will play volleyball at the University of Hartford in the fall.
Julia Flynn, Notre Dame (H), 2010-2013
The Catholic Conference Player of the Year as a senior as well as a two-time MGVCA Division 2 All-State selection, Flynn led Notre Dame to the Div. 2 state title in 2013, while earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors. A three-time Catholic Conference All-Star, Flynn finished her career with 735 kills, 495 digs and 166 aces.
After Notre Dame: Flynn went on to play at Bryant University from 2015-2019 where she had 1,147 kills.
Demi Fogarty, Arlington Catholic, 2012-2015
A two-time Most Valuable Player of the Catholic Central Large, Fogarty was a force as a middle hitter, amassing 1,090 kills for her career. As a senior, Fogarty had 437 kills in leading the Cougars to a 20-5 record.
After Arlington Catholic: Fogarty is a member of the Student Nurses Association at UMass-Lowell.
Kate Hill, Bishop Feehan, 2007-2010
A two-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic, Hill led the Shamrocks to Div. 2 South sectional final appearances in 2009 and 2010. A two-time Eastern Athletic Conference and All-State selection, Hill amassed 460 kills, 182 digs, 86 aces and 67 blocks for her career.
After Bishop Feehan: Hill earned a bachelor’s in applied physics from Providence College.
Janice Leao, New Bedford, 2015-2018
A dominant presence, Leao had a terrific senior season in which she had 445 kills and a .549 hitting percentage this year in leading her team to a 22-2 record and a berth in the Div. 1 South final. For her career, Leao registered 956 kills, 213 blocks and 85 aces.
After New Bedford: Leao completed her freshman year at the University of Miami where she led the team in total blocks with 84.
Michelle Legatova, Newton North, 2014-2017
A two-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic and member of the MGVCA All-State team, Legatova played a key role in leading the Tigers to the Div. 1 state championship in 2017. A year earlier, Legatova was part of a Newton North team which went 22-1 and made it to the state finals.
After Newton North: A redshirt freshman at Fresno Pacific University, Legatova amassed 236 kills in her first season as a Sunbird.
Alexis Mancha, Andover, 2015-2018
A two-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic, Mancha was the Merrimack Valley Conference MVP as a senior. A four-year starter for the Golden Warriors, Mancha ended her career with 459 kills, 808 digs, 489 assists and 167 aces.
After Andover: Mancha just completed her freshman year at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., where she was second on the team in digs (340) and tied for second in service aces (47).
Maura Manley, New Bedford, 2007-2010
A two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, Manley had 360 kills as a senior. A two-time MGAC Div. 1 All-State nominee, Manley led the Whalers to three Big Three championships. Manley was a part of a state championship team as a junior, breaking school records for kills in a match (36) and in a season (408).
After New Bedford: Manley played volleyball at Dartmouth College from 2011-2014.
Sarah McGowan, Melrose, 2009-2012
A dominant middle hitter for the Red Raiders, McGowan shattered the school record for kills in a season with 341 as she helped Melrose win the Div. 2 state title in 2012. A two-time MGVCA All-State selection, McGowan ended her career with 749 kills.
After Melrose: McGowan played club volleyball at Boston College and earned a bachelor’s in Applied Psychology and Human Development and Human Resources.
Rachel Melampy, Duxbury, 2014-2017
The MVP of the Patriot League as a senior, Melampy had 248 kills, 91 digs and 48 assists in leading her team to a Div. 2 South title. A three-time Patriot League All-Star, Melampy ended her career with 762 kills, 189 digs and 114 aces.
After Duxbury: Melampy just completed her sophomore year at Maine Maritime where she has amassed 568 kills and 364 digs in 46 matches
Melissa Morelli, Lynnfield, 2016-2019
A three-time Cape Ann League All Star, Morelli owns school career records for kills (711), aces (227) and assists (1,186). In her final three years at Lynnfield, the Pioneers were 63-8 and captured a Div. 2 North sectional title in 2018.
After Lynnfield: Morelli will attend Hamilton College in the fall.
Kirsten Morrison, North Reading, 2007-2010
A four-year starter, Morrison was the Cape Ann League Player of the Year as a senior after leading the Hornets in kills and blocks. In her junior year, the junior middle hitter led the Hornets with 39 aces, 58 blocks, 123 digs and 259 kills.
After North Reading: Morrison attended UMass-Boston where she played three sports (volleyball, basketball and softball), earning all-Little East honors in all of them.
Ingrid Murphy, Barnstable, 2015-2018
A mainstay on back-to-back Div. 1 state championship teams in 2015 and 2016, Murphy earned All-State honors as a senior. In her career, Murphy tallied 959 kills, 731 digs and 159 aces.
After Barnstable: Murphy just concluded her freshman year at Bentley University where she amassed 331 digs and 253 kills.
Dasha Smolina, Winchester, 2016-2019
The Gatorade Player of the Year, Smolina helped lead Winchester to its first appearance in the Div. 1 state finals. The senior setter recorded 690 assists and 295 digs, 130 kills, 89 service aces and 18 blocks. Smolina ended her career with 1,338 assists.
After Winchester: Smolina will attend Boston University in the fall.
Abigail Sonuga, Haverhill, 2011-2014
A two-time Merrimack Valley Conference Player of the Year, Sonuga had 293 kills, 54 blocks and a 98.1 serving percentage as a senior. She graduated in 2014 as the school’s record holder in five categories.
After Haverhill: Sonuga played at Franklin Pierce for two years before transferring to Towson in 2017. As a senior at Towson, Sonuga was named to the all-CAA Tournament Team.
Kristina Thompson, New Bedford, 2007-2010
Thompson was a mainstay on the 2009 Div. 1 state championship squad, recording 238 digs and 18 aces. She ended her career in 2010 with a school-record 756 digs as well as 707 service receptions and 36 aces.
After New Bedford: Thompson joined the Navy after graduation.
Ashley Wang, Newton North, 2015-2018
One of the premier players of the decade, the three-time Boston Herald All-Scholastic helped guide the Tigers to three trips to the Div. 1 state finals, winning two of them. A three-time Bay State Conference All-Star, Wang was also a three-time Rhode Island Invitational All-Star from 2016-2018.
After Newton North: Wang is a sophomore on the volleyball team at Harvard, appearing in 21 matches as a freshman.
Kelsey Weymouth, North Attleboro, 2008-2011
A two-time Hockomock League MVP and four-time all-star, Weymouth racked up 344 kills, 167 service points, 70 aces, 138 assists, 68 digs and 18 blocks as a senior. For her career, Weymouth amassed 881 kills and 220 aces.
After North Attleboro: Weymouth played college volleyball at Stonehill where she was a four-year regular, ending her career in 2016 with 707 kills.
Cierra Yim, Dartmouth, 2016-2019
A top-notch setter, Yim recently became the fourth girls volleyball player in state history to surpass 2,000 assists, ending her career with 2,068. She registered 624 assists as a senior in leading the Indians to a 21-1 record and a berth in the Div. 1 South semifinals.
After Dartmouth: Yim heads to Clemson in the fall where she plans on playing intramural volleyball.
