FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - The Kentucky Education Association released a statement on the reopening of schools Friday, calling on districts to start the year online.
A new school year normally brings new challenges for teachers, parents and students. But this year is unlike any other.
“I’ve heard veteran teachers say this is my twenty-something year teaching, but it feels like my first year. This is something they’ve never done before,” said Jessica Hiler, president of the Fayette County Education Association.
Hiler says the school district will solely do virtual learning for the time being. And now all school districts are being called to do the same.
“We’re the ones that have to be there and provide the education and all of the services for our kids,” Hiler said. “I think it’s important they listen to the largest voice that there is for educators in the state.”
The KEA, which represents 42 thousand current and retired educators across the state, say they believe schools should start the year virtually, due to the spike in COVID-19 cases. Hiler says they made the decision weeks ago for the same reason.
“Mostly because of the spike in cases we’ve seen across the state,” Hiler said. “And then specifically, the spike in cases we’ve seen in Lexington.”
Hiler says Fayette County School District leaders will reevaluate the situation six weeks after classes start. She says that’s when they’ll decide whether students will zip up their backpacks and return to in-person learning, or continue virtually.
“It’s important to remember this is temporary,” Hiler said. “It isn’t going to be forever. We’re going to do the very best we can to provide the best education to kids. Eventually we’ll be back together.”
In the statement, KEA says in-person instruction shouldn’t resume until the infection rate in both Kentucky and the county in which the district is located, are both below four percent, and both remain below four percent for 21 consecutive days.
Hiler says the Fayette County School District has made sure every student has Chromebook and access to a hotspot, if needed, to try and make the transition easier.
