Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols hit his 660th career home run on Sunday afternoon (box score), tying Willie Mays for the fifth-most all-time. Pujols' home run came in the eighth inning against Colorado Rockies pitcher Carlos Estevez. It was a two-run shot that propelled the Angels to a 4-3 lead.
Here's a look at the dinger:
Pujols entered Sunday hitting .235/.279/.383 (79 OPS+) with three home runs in his first 122 plate appearances. He hadn't homered since August 4, when he went deep off Seattle Mariners right-hander Justin Dunn. It had been 93 plate appearances without a homer, which was Pujols' longest homer-less streak since 2014.
The only players in Major League history with more home runs than Pujols are now Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714) and Alex Rodriguez (696).
"It's something that I'm going to tell my grandkids, my kids," Pujols said of the milestone. "It's a legacy that's going to live forever. ... To be able to have my name in the sentence with Willie Mays is unbelievable I'm really humbled."
Earlier this season, Pujols passed Alex Rodriguez on MLB's all-time RBI list to move into sole possession of second place all-time. Only the legendary Hank Aaron, who recorded 2,297 in 23 seasons, stands in front of Pujols now.
It should be noted, however, that MLB does not count RBI prior to 1920 because it was not yet an official statistic. Both Babe Ruth (2,214 RBI) and Cap Anson (2,075 RBI) are in the 2,000 RBI club when you count pre-1920.
Pujols, 40, is in his 20th MLB season and the ninth year of a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels. The future Hall of Famer is already regarded as one of the best hitters in baseball history, and while his power has regressed as he aged, he'll still have a chance to continue adding to his legacy this season.
