FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Bolstered by an increased ability in contact tracing, ongoing COVID-19 surveillance testing, continued commitment to health and safety protocols, and a broad desire from Colorado State student-athletes, Colorado State Athletics is increasing the activity level for all sport programs effective this week.
"Our student-athletes have done a remarkable job following all appropriate health and safety protocols as we have returned to campus," said Director of Athletics Joe Parker. "Under the guidance and approval of the University's Pandemic Preparedness Team, our return-to-activity plans have been cleared. It is an important step to allow our student-athletes the opportunity to participate in activity as the Mountain West continues to plan and focus on the possibility of a spring competition schedule for fall sports as well as an upcoming winter schedule."
Colorado State Athletics has reported one positive test result in the past two weeks that was identified and referred for testing based on symptoms. The department has completed 665 tests with 27 confirmed positive cases among student-athletes since they began returning to campus in early June, and there are currently no active cases. Athletic training rooms are currently open by appointment only, group size during workouts remains restricted, and student-athletes, staff, and coaches are required to wear masks while on campus – consistent with University policy. Weight rooms and equipment also undergo rigorous cleanings between groups and at the end of the day.
Additionally, the department is randomly testing student-athletes on a weekly basis as part of ongoing surveillance testing. All such tests to date have been negative. Colorado State University, in addition to traditional PCR testing, has also introduced surveillance testing and wastewater testing.
Student-athletes were given the opportunity to opt-in to athletic activities by Aug. 31; they opted in at a rate of 97 percent. Student-athletes retain the ability to opt out of activities at any time, and those who receive scholarships who choose to opt out will not have their scholarships affected.
All activities remain subject to revision by state and local health authorities, the university, the NCAA, and the Mountain West.
