Earlier this week Prince William spoke publicly about the new investigation into Princess Diana’s BBC Panorama interview, describing the inquiry as “a step in the right direction.” And today Prince Harry has let it be known that he is getting “regular updates,” but that a statement is not needed “to imagine how he is feeling privately.”

A source close to the Duke of Sussex said today: “Harry is getting regular updates and is aware of everything that is happening. You do not need a public statement to imagine how he is feeling privately, people know how much his mother means to him. He has bravely spoken out in the past about loss and grief, and the immense impact it has had on him.”

It is not known whether William liaised with his brother or contacted him before sharing his comments on the investigation, which were made public on Wednesday evening. Both Kensington Palace and a spokesman for the Sussexes declined to comment when asked whether or not Harry had been informed in advance of William’s decision to speak out.

However, a source close to the Duke of Sussex made it clear that Harry was not happy about stories that have surfaced today accusing him of failing to stand by his brother.

“Sadly, some people are not just seeing this as a drive for truth, but also trying to use this as an opportunity to try to drive a wedge between the brothers,” the source said. Despite living very separate lives, the impression had previously been given that the Princes would be publicly united regarding anything to do with their mother.

The independent investigation into the way in which Martin Bashir obtained his landmark interview with the late Princess is being led by Lord Dyson and will begin immediately. Diana’s brother Earl Spencer has said that Bashir used “sheer dishonesty” to secure their trust and has accused the BBC of a “whitewash” over the incident in a letter seen by the Daily Mail.

Prince William’s statement on Wednesday said:

“The independent investigation is a step in the right direction. It should help establish the truth behind the actions that led to the Panorama interview and subsequent decisions taken by those in the BBC at the time.”
