COLUMBUS, Ohio – Haskell Garrett picked up a major postseason award on Wednesday when he was named a first team All-American by CBS Sports. He’s one of two Big Ten players on the team, joining Northwestern’s Brandon Joseph.
Garrett joins a select group of defensive tackles in Ohio State history who have been named All-Americans. The list includes Jim Stillwagon (1969, 1970), Dan Wilkinson (1993), Mike Vrabel (1996) and Quinn Pitcock (2006).
One of the feel-good stories in all of college football, Garrett was medically cleared to play just four days before the 2020 season began and since then has been a force and a leader along the defensive line. In six games, he has 17 tackles and leads all defensive tackles with 4.0 tackles for loss to go along with two sacks. In a 52-12 win over Michigan State, he has an interception in the end zone for the first “pick six” of his career.
A senior from Las Vegas, Nev., Garrett has started five of Ohio State’s six games and is a 39-game career veteran. He’s posted career highs in every statistical category this season and was a third team All-Big Ten choice last week. His career statistical totals are 37 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss (for minus 19 yards) and one interception. In last Saturday’s Big Ten Championship Game, a 22-10 win over Northwestern, he posted a career-high five tackles.
Garrett has been a key piece of a Buckeye run defense that ranks No. 7 nationally against the run, allowing an average of just 96.6 yards per game and 3.3 yards per carry. Over the last three games, the Buckeyes have been even better, allowing just 61.6 yards per game and 2.3 yards per carry.

Two other Buckeyes were honored by CBS Sports with second team All-America picks: RG Wyatt Davis and CB Shaun Wade. Davis, the Big Ten’s Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year, leads an offensive line that has produced the Big Ten’s top rushing offense (275.6 yds./game) while Wade is Ohio State’s leader with two interceptions. He was the Big Ten’s Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year.
Ohio State, champions of the Big Ten Conference for the fourth straight year, earned its second consecutive berth in the College Football Playoff and will take on No. 2 Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2021 in New Orleans.
