Senior Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) led the six Pirates double-digit scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior Jared Rhoden (Baldwin, N.Y.) had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Seton Hall's defense allowed Xavier to make nine of its first 12 shots only to then hold the Musketeers to 32 percent shooting the rest of the game, including just 5-for-24 from three-point range overall.
Seton Hall (7-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) has now won six of its last seven games and has now beaten Xavier at Cintas Center three consecutive years. The Pirates are also now at least 4-1 in the BIG EAST for the second straight year and eighth time in program history (2019-20, 2017-18, 2011-12, 1999-00, 1998-99, 1992-93 and 1988-89).
Turning Point
Seton Hall and Xavier were in an early battle with the Musketeers making most of their shots while the Pirates kept pace with free throws. The game was tied at 22-22 when the Pirates took over as Mamukelashvili generated a Xavier turnover and shot a pass to senior Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.) for a fastbreak dunk.
The Pirates took a three-point lead into the final media timeout of the first half and then from there dismantled the Musketeers on both ends of the floor. Junior Takal Molson (Buffalo, N.Y.) got it going with back-to-back layups, the second after drawing a charge on Xavier. After a missed Musketeers three, the Pirates went on the fastbreak, and senior Bryce Aiken (Randolph, N.J.) found Rhoden for the driving layup and a nine-point lead, 37-28.
Xavier continued to miss shots, and the Pirates continued to come down and make them as Molson again found the bottom of the net in a driving layup in traffic. Then after a missed three, Rhoden cleaned up the offensive rebound and had a huge putback lay-in to put the Pirates up 13.
After a Xavier turnover, Aiken got the ball and lit Xavier up with a long three-pointer, sending the Pirates into halftime leading, 44-28. In total, Seton Hall forced Xavier into 0-for-5 shooting and five turnovers in the final 4:03 of the half.
The Pirates kept firing on all cylinders in the second half as Xavier got no closer than 14 points. Senior Shavar Reynolds, Jr. (Manchester, N.J.) had the cake topper when he drilled his only three of the night with 4:49 remaining to give The Hall a 27-point advantage, 79-52. Xavier's final 16 points of the night came with the contest long decided.
