Dear Reader,

This year we’ve received and personally answered hundreds of questions about coronavirus, published thousands of Covid stories, streamed every one of the governor’s press conferences and developed new events and data visualizations to keep Vermonters in the know.

We’ve also covered the unprecedented summer and fall legislative sessions, provided blow-by-blow reporting on the primary and general elections and hosted live debates with top candidates.

It’s likely that you’ve been reading our news as you’ve been navigating the uncertainty and challenges of Covid-19 and it’s ripple effects. And it’s probably fair to say that everyone has been impacted in some way by this pandemic.

As we all celebrate birthdays, funerals and holidays over Zoom or at a distance with face coverings, it’s been painful to experience the disconnection and isolation of this year.

Here at Digger, our staff is going through it too. Our children are in and out of school, we’re all working remotely and visits with family and friends are confined to the screen. Sometimes it’s hard to get up and keep going.

But we are motivated by the connectivity and information readers have told us we are providing in this moment. Things like our Covid-19 liveblog, our Bright Side series and our new Letters to the Editor section — these are parts of our work that feel vital right now.

Every year, VTDigger runs our annual fundraising drive in November through the end of the year. The membership support we gain during this time keeps our nonprofit newsroom in business for the rest of the upcoming year.

We are halfway to our goal of 4,000 members and sending 40,000 meals to the Vermont Foodbank to help them combat rising hunger due to Covid-related job loss in Vermont.
