MUNCIE - Ball State gymnastics made the jump from Meet No. 1 to Meet No. 2. The Cardinals improved their team score in three of four events and registered a season-high 194.425 in a dual victory of Illinois State on Sunday.

"our approach was more confident this week," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "There are always some first meet jitters and we came out and were more intentional on the gymnastics we were doing. It was nice to see them tighten it in and go after some of those tenths and some of the things we talk about in the gym."

Ball State improved on vault thanks to 9.825 scores from Arden Hudson and Suki Pfister. "Suki upgraded her vault with a 10.0 start value with a hand front pike, which was fun to watch," Saleem said. "And Arden looked great. She's really consistent in the gym and it was nice to see her bring that out to the competition floor. That's what you love to see from your upperclassmen."

Two sophomores and a freshman - Grace Evans, Megan Teter and Victoria Henry - all went 9.800 or better on bars as the Cardinals showed improvement in that event compared to last week as well.  Teter scored 9.825 in both bars and floor.

"Teter did really well in her two events. She hit really well and was really confident. It was awesome," Saleem said.

Hudson continued her strong beam performances, scoring a 9.825. Hudson tied with Pfister for first place in the vault and was the meet's top performer on beam. On floor, All-MAC performer Claudia Goyco returned after missing last week's meet and she delivered a first-place 9.850 routine.

"Claudia in the floor lineup is always something you're looking for. Not just from the score perspective, but to have one of our seasoned competitors out there helps lead the team," Saleem said.

The Cardinals improved on floor, as five Cardinals scored 9.750 or better. Following Goyco was Teter and Henry both with a 9.825.

Sunday's showing demonstrated the team's depth and quality throughout the roster. Saleem noted that no Cardinal competes all-around, meaning the team together as a whole pulls together.

"It took all of us. We have some all-arounders who have the ability to do that, but this shows the strength of the team as a whole," the head coach said. It's fun to see the depth we have this year."

Ball State is scheduled to compete Saturday, Feb. 6 at Eastern Michigan. Fans can follow the Cards on social media at @BallStateGym.
