After 22 dormant years, the New Radicals reunited Wednesday (Jan. 20) to perform during the “Parade Across America” virtual event, in celebration of the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Of course, they played their enduring pop hit “You Get What You Give” in all its late '90s glory -- with lead singer Gregg Alexander even rocking his signature bucket hat during the performance.
As Alexander and co. performed the song for the first time together in more than two decades, video clips of Americans across the country holding up inspirational signs -- fighting for social justice, against COVID-19, for “a new normal” -- added an extra dose of poignancy. The New Radicals did not indulge in the song’s spoken-word outro, leaving viewers to wonder which celebrities would receive shout-outs in a 2021 update of the “Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson / Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson” line.
