David Bates Earns CoSIDA Academic All-America Honors - Union College Athletics

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Recent graduate David Bates '21 of the Union College cross country and men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams earned one final honor to cap his decorated athletic and academic career today, as he was recognized as one of the top student-athletes in the country with a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Division III Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday.

Bates is the first men's cross country or track & field student-athlete in Union history to receive the prestigious national recognition and just the second all-time for Union cross country/track & field, joining former teammate Samantha Miller '19. In total, only 32 Union student-athletes have been recognized as Academic All-Americans in school history, with 22 of those selections coming since 2005.

The Southport, Conn., native is one of only 46 student-athletes across the country to earn a spot on the men's Academic All-American team, spanning more than 300 Division III programs and thousands of eligible student-athletes.

Bates had a stellar career on and off the track for Union during his time in Schenectady. A double major in biomedical engineering and French and Francophone Studies, Bates graduated with a 3.81 GPA and earned the school's William W. Thomas Award, given to a senior who has excelled in and contributed most to French and Francophone Studies on the basis of academic, personal and extracurricular achievement. He was named Union's Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete recognition during his junior year as well.

On the track, Bates was named a USTFCCCA All-American and All-Atlantic Region honoree in the 800 meters as a junior. He finished second in the event at both the Liberty League Indoor Championships and the AARTFC Indoor Championships, in the process becoming the first Union men's track runner to qualify for the NCAA Championships in more than a decade. He finished his collegiate career less than a second away from the school record in the 800 meters that was set in 1973.

Bates' honor caps a record-setting year for Union in the classroom, as the department combined for 15 CoSIDA Academic All-District selections – nearly doubling the previous record of eight set on three different occasions – and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, marking Union's seventh year of multiple AAA selections since 2009. Union student-athletes also combined for a school-record 239 conference All-Academic Team selections in 2020-21 as well, continuing to showcase their talents in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.
