Gebel earned preseason all-league honors for the second straight year after a fantastic junior season that saw her earn first-team All-Southern Conference and Southern Conference All-Tournament team accolades in the spring. Gebel finished third in the SoCon with 3.82 kills per set and was fifth overall with 260 total kills. She finished ninth in the league in digs per set at 3.54, the only player in the SoCon to grace the top 10 in both statistical categories. Gebel led the Catamounts with double-digit kills in 16 matches, posting 12 total double-doubles. Additionally, the Wildwood, Mo. native claimed a spot on the CoSIDA District 3 Academic All-District First Team.
Joining Gebel on the preseason All-Southern Conference team are Sharlissa De Jesus (The Citadel), Neci Harris (Furman), Jaida Howell (Mercer), Annie Karle (Mercer), Lauren Deaton (Samford), Kenya, McQuirter (Samford), and Sarah Barham (Wofford).
In the preseason coaches' poll, WCU tallied 41 points and was picked to finish fourth for the second straight season. In the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign, the Catamounts recorded an 11-8 overall record and an 11-5 league mark for a third-place finish.
Defending regular-season and tournament champion Samford earned 62 points and six first-place votes to be tabbed as the league favorite. Mercer, the 2020-21 league runner-up, accumulated 58 points and three first-place votes followed by Wofford (46 points), WCU (41 points), ETSU (35 points), Furman (30 points), The Citadel (27 points), Chattanooga (17 points) and UNCG (8 points).
The Catamounts welcome Presbyterian College to the Ramsey Center auxiliary gym on Friday at 4 p.m. in an exhibition match before opening the season at the Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson next weekend.
