All-Decade boys soccer team - Boston Herald

There has been no shortage of talent on the pitch across the state over the last decade. The Boston Herald’s MIAA Eastern Mass. Boys Soccer All-Decade Team consists of players who competed between the 2010 and 2019 seasons. In all, 21 field players and two goalies made the cut and were split into starting and reserve units.

Starting Field Players (10)

Cole DeNormandie, Lincoln-Sudbury (2007-10)

DeNormandie reached a stratosphere that not many in the state have achieved. The superb forward is the only player from the decade to be named a two-time All-American and he also garnered All-New England status in 2008 as well as being the state’s 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year. DeNormandie started all four years and led the Dual County League in scoring in three of them. He finished his career with 68 goals and 24 assists for 92 points.

Where Are They Now: DeNormandie played two seasons at Cincinnati before finishing his collegiate career at Boston College. He totaled 16 goals and six assists combined in college.

Mac Steeves, Needham (2009-12)

A dynamic offensive force, Steeves is one of the most decorated players in Needham’s illustrious program history. The 2012 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, Steeves lifted the Rockets to a Div. 1 state crown as a senior by scoring the game’s lone tally to cap a 20-goal, 25-assist campaign – the 45 points set a single-season program record. The All-American, who was selected All-New England in 2011, amassed 67 goals and 51 assists for 118 career points.

Where Are They Now: The 2014 College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player, Steeves scored 35 goals and added 12 assists in four seasons at Providence College. The Houston Dynamo selected Steeves No. 43 overall in the 2018 draft. Steeves most recently played for the Harford Athletic of the USL.

Thayrone Miranda, Somerville (2010-2013)

Miranda’s goal-scoring expertise made him one of the most dangerous strikers to come through the state. Miranda led the Highlanders to a Div. 1 state final as a senior, notching 20 goals and 12 assists that season. A 2013 All-American as well as an All-New England recipient the previous year, Miranda tallied 78 career goals and was twice named the Greater Boston League MVP.

Where Are They Now: Miranda played in a couple of semi-professional soccer leagues after his illustrious career with the Highlanders.

Jacob LaBranche, Nauset (2013-2016)

The star-studded midfielder was the 2016 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year and also earned All-American status that year. LaBranche spearheaded Nauset’s run to a perfect season and a Div. 2 state title as a senior by netting nine goals and 17 assists. The two-time Atlantic Coast Player of the Year finished with career numbers of 27 goals and 45 assists.

Where Are They Now: LaBranche now plays at Middlebury College and made 18 appearances for the Panthers last season.

Charlie Booth, Concord-Carlisle (2011-2014)

Booth’s impeccable defensive play at center back made a major impact for Concord-Carlisle. The vaunted defender led the Patriots to a 20-0-1 mark and a Div. 2 state title as a senior as Booth’s defense contributed mightily to C-C’s 18 shutouts that year. For his stellar effort, Booth was named an All-American in 2014 and was a two-time Dual County League All-Star.

Where Are They Now: Booth went on to start in all 47 games for Bryant University over three years before transferring to the University of Rhode Island. Booth now plays for FC Tucson of USL League One.

Matt Keys, King Philip (2007-2010)

A stalwart central defender, Keys was one of three defenders to earn All-American honors this decade. The former Hockomock League MVP anchored the Warriors defense and was one of the league’s top defenders for three straight seasons. Keys netted 12 goals as senior, four of which were game-winners.

Where Are They Now: Keys continued play for UMass. He captained the Minutemen as a senior and started in all 69 games of his career, finishing with nine goals and four assists.

Klisman Sousa, New Bedford (2010-2013)

The skilled midfielder and adept attacker for the Whalers was a field general who was always in the action. Sousa netted 22 goals and dished out 18 assists as a senior. Sousa was twice recognized as the Big Three MVP and earned All-New England honors in 2013. He was a two-time All-State selection.

Where Are They Now: Sousa started in 44 games over his career at Providence College and earned All-Big East Second Team honors as a senior. Sousa played in the USL for the Hartford Athletic and FC Tucson.

Leonardo Teixeira, Brockton (2017-2018)

Coming over from Cape Verde, Teixeira had an immense and immediate impact on Brockton, leading the Boxers to the program’s first Div. 1 state as a junior. Teixeira put together a phenomenal 31-goal campaign that season, including tallying three goals and two assists in the state final. He scored 50 goals in just two seasons and was named a Big Three All-Star twice along with earning All-State recognition as a senior.

Where Are They Now: Teixeira scored 20 goals and added seven assists in his first season at Massasoit this past fall.

Aram Ouligian, Needham (2011-2014)

Ouligian’s talent matched his behemoth 6-foot-5 presence as the two-time captain played a major role in capturing two Div. 1 state titles in three years for the Rockets. A 2014 All-American, Ouligian was also named the Bay State Conference MVP that season after scoring 24 goals and adding 10 helpers for a Needham squad that went 20-0-4. A three-time Bay State Conference All-Star, Ouligian finished his career with 50 goals and 20 assists for 70 points.

Where Are They Now: Ouligian saw the field immediately at Colgate and never left it, starting in all 87 games of his career. The 2018 Patriot League Player of the Year, he also earned United Soccer Coaches First Team All-Atlantic Region honors as a senior.

Nathaniel Cardoza, Oliver Ames (2014-2017)

The statistics only tell part of the story for the sensational two-way midfielder. Cardoza helped Oliver Ames to three Division 2 state finals in his career, including scoring a goal as the Tigers claimed the crown in 2015. A three-time Hockomock League All-Star and Hockomock MVP as a senior, he registered five goals and 16 assists that season en route to All-American honors as well as All-State recognition for a second time.

Where Are They Now: Cardoza continued his playing career at UMass, where he has started in 10 games over two seasons.

Goalie (1)

Bobby Hurstak, Lincoln-Sudbury (2012-2015)

The exceptional netminder routinely produced for the Warriors, and on the biggest of stages as well. A three-time Dual County League All-Star, Hurstak didn’t allow a goal in the Warriors final five postseason games on their run to a Div. 1 state title in 2015. The two-year captain had an outstanding senior campaign, logging 15 shutouts and a 0.45 goals-against average. A three-time All-State selection, he received All-New England recognition as a senior.

Where Are They Now: Hurstak stayed between the pipes at Holy Cross, where he made 17 starts as a senior.

Coach of the Decade

Ray Pavlik, Concord-Carlisle

There hasn’t been a program that has had more consistent success over the last 10 years than Concord-Carlisle. Under Pavlik’s leadership, the Patriots have captured three Division 2 state titles – no program has won more state championships this decade – to go along with four North crowns and seven sectional final appearances. Pavlik and Concord-Carlisle’s success is undeniable as Pavlik went 153-25-27 (.812) this decade.

Reserves (11)

Carlos Ruiz, East Boston (2008-2011)

Ruiz was a proven goal-scorer and then some for the Jets as the four-year starter and two-time captain netted 77 goals, including 37 during his senior season, and recorded 63 assists in his career for 140 points. He was named his team’s MVP for three straight seasons and as a senior was an All-New England recipient.

Where Are They Now: Ruiz played one year at Boston University before finishing his career at UMass-Lowell. He started in 50 of 56 games for his college career, tallying seven goals and seven assists.

James McCully, Nauset (2014-2017)

The attacking midfielder sparked a juggernaut of an attack that routinely put fear into the opposition. McCully was a dynamic offensive threat who owns the program record for career goals with 97. A 2017 All-American and two-time All-State selection, McCully also dished out 36 career assists and enjoyed a sensational 31-goal, 10-assist senior season. Over McCully’s final three seasons, he led the Warriors to a 58-3-3 mark.

Where Are They Now: McCully’s collegiate career began at the University of New Hampshire before transferring to Keene State, where he made 18 starts this past fall.

Sadraque Ferraz, Randolph (2012-2015)

An abundant goal-scorer, the forward posted a school record 127 career goals to go along with 48 assists for 175 points. Ferraz especially dazzled as a senior by tallying an astounding 46 goals and 14 assists. For his stellar performances, he earned All-New England honors in 2015 and was an All-State selection twice.

Where Are They Now: Ferraz, who is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, played for UMass-Boston in 2016 after starring at Randolph.

Michael O’Brien, Concord-Carlisle (2008-2011)

The forward’s big-time production and play allowed him to be a cornerstone piece in Concord-Carlisle’s two Div. 2 state titles it won during O’Brien’s career. The Dual County League MVP as a senior, he notched 21 goals and three assists and was also named an All-American that season. For his career, he scored 46 goals, which was good for third all-time in program history, and added 10 assists. A three-sport standout, O’Brien also starred in hockey and lacrosse, also winning a state title in the latter.

Where Are They Now: Despite excelling in three sports, O’Brien didn’t play sports at the collegiate level. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and studied business.

Jesus Batiz, Boston International (2015-2018)

Utilizing his lightning-quick speed and blazing shot, the two-time Boston City League Player of the Year scored 70 career goals, with 63 of them coming over his final two seasons. As a senior, he continuously sparked Boston International by scoring 31 goals. The year before, Batiz played a major role in getting Boston International to a Div. 4 state final.

Where Are They Now: Batiz played for Mass United FC of the UPSL and last August, he signed with a Greek professional soccer team, Aiolikos FC.

Carter Ocko, St. John’s Prep (2009-2012)

The Eagles always seem to have a formidable defense, and that was even truer when Ocko anchored the back line. Ocko’s sterling defensive play earned him Catholic Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior and he was a two-time conference All-Star. As a senior, Ocko received All-New England recognition.

Where Are They Now: Ocko tasted success again at Endicott, where in 2015 he was named to the Division III Athletic All-American Third Team as well as being tabbed the Commonwealth Coast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Paul Beatty, Silver Lake (2010-2013)

With a strong finishing touch, not to mention sprinter speed, Beatty was an offensive weapon for the Lakers. As a senior he established a new school single-season record with 37 goals and led Silver Lake to a Div. 1 South title. Beatty, who earned All-New England status as a senior, amassed 58 goals and 18 assists for 76 career points – the top mark in program history.

Where Are They Now: Beatty’s collegiate career began at UMass-Lowell before he transferred to WPI and once there, he started in 18 games over three seasons and scored seven goals.

Eric Martin, Danvers (2009-2012)

The powerful forward rewrote the record books as the first player in school history to reach 100 points, ending up with 82 goals and 56 assists for 138 career points. As a senior, Martin netted 39 goals to earn All-New England honors as well as receiving All-State recognition for a second time. Martin also won two Div. 3 state championships in basketball.

Where Are They Now: Martin made 58 career starts at UMass-Lowell and as a senior was named the America East Defender of the Year and selected to the NSCAA All-East Region Third Team.

Cam Bielski, Dover-Sherborn (2007-2010)

A four-year starter for the Raiders, the midfielder was a pivotal difference-maker and helped Dover-Sherborn obtain a Div. 3 state title in 2010. That season, Bielski recorded 22 goals and 17 assists, including tallying a goal and an assist in the state championship victory. For his effort, Bielski earned All-New England honors as a senior and was a two-time All-State selection. The two-time Tri-Valley League MVP scored 49 goals and added 49 assists for 98 career points.

Where Are They Now: Bielski played for three seasons at the University of New Hampshire.

Thomas Ballenthin, Lexington (2007-2010)

Ballenthin never missed a game over his four years with the Minutemen. As a senior, the former Middlesex League MVP anchored a defense that allowed just 10 goals in 21 games as he garnered All-New England recognition. Also a 2009 All-State selection, Ballenthin tallied 20 goals and 22 assists over his final two seasons.

Where Are They Now: Ballenthin played an immediate defensive role for Providence College and started in 74 of 81 career games for the Friars. He was named the team’s Unsung hero as a senior.

Bobby Ivatts, Walpole (2010-13)

A four-year starter and three-time Bay State Conference All-Star for the Rebels, he established his legacy in Walpole as a senior, leading the league in scoring with 10 goals and 12 assists and tallying three game-winners in the tournament while leading his 13th-seeded squad to the Division 2 state final. Ivatts finished with over 40 points for his career, which was capped by an All-State selection.

Where Are They Now: After a year prepping at Worcester Academy, Ivatts went on to play at Endicott College, starting 65 games over four years and earning All-CCC honors as a senior.

Goalie (1)

Rufus Adams, Duxbury (2013-2016)

Adams, a native of Buckingham, England, came across the pond and displayed his immense talent stateside with the Dragons. Adams was just one of two goalies from the decade to earn All-American honors, which he did as a senior, and he also earned All-State recognition in 2015. A four-year starter, Adams registered 10 shutouts and a 0.64 goals-against average as a senior.

Where Are They Now: Adams now stars at WPI, where he has made 38 starts over three seasons and posted a sterling 0.51 goals-against average.
