UPDATE 2:20 P.M.
Well that’s one miss. Tristan Leigh commits to Clemson
Next Saturday was supposed to be the 2021 edition of the All American Bowl, the annual high school All-American game held in San Antonio. The game itself was called off in October due to COVID-19 pandemic, but there will still be an event worth keeping an eye on today.
Instead of the game, NBC will air a two-hour special called “All-American Bowl: Declaration Day.” Some of the top uncommitted prospects will announce their college decisions on Declaration Day including a few targets on LSU’s radar.
Defensive end Korey Foreman, offensive tackle Tristan Leigh and safety Jardin Gilbert all have LSU offers and will all announce their commitments Saturday.
Formean, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 247 composite, already signed with a school during December’s early signing period but will announce on Saturday. At one point, LSU had a real shot at landing Foreman, especially considering how close he is with signee Maason Smith, but that interest appears to have waned. The majority of the 247 predictions has Foreman announcing he signed with the hometown USC Trojans.
Leigh is probably the player LSU covets most highly. A five-star tackle from Virginia, Leigh is down to a final four of LSU, Clemson, Florida and Oklahoma. Our friends at Crimson and Cream Machine strongly believe that Leigh will pledge to the Sooners and 247 reflects that. But LSU is still a player in the Leigh sweepstakes and Leigh has visited Baton Rouge several times, both officially and unofficially. There’s also the fact that Leigh was originally going to declare his intentions during the Early Signing Period, when Oklahoma was the overwhelming favorite, but decided to wait. And remember Leigh was visiting Gainesville the same weekend as the LSU-Florida game. Could that game have played into LSU’s favor?
Also Garrett Nussmeier was trying to recruit Leigh to LSU on Twitter last week AND LEIGH RETWEETED IT. Make of that what you will.
And then there’s four-star safety Jardin Gilbert, who attends U-High. LSU got in on Gilbert late, offering a scholarship in November. Despite the late offer, LSU surged to the forefront and it appears to be a battle between the Tigers, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.
But there’s also the fact that LSU signed three safeties, including the top two in the class Sage Ryan and Derrick Davis Jr. Safety was a position of need for LSU and it’s fair to say that need has been addressed. A&M, on the other hand, only signed one safety last year and this year.
LSU already has a top-five recruiting class in hand, but Saturday can be a day where the Tigers bolster their class. Coverage begins at 2:00 P.M.
