BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Augustana track and field had an impressive second day at the NCAA Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex, in Birmingham, Alabama. Two individual Vikings in junior Tyl Woelber and senior Mearah Miedema claimed All-America honors. The women's distance medley relay team also garnered All-America honors while setting a new school record.
The DMR ran to a fourth-place finish, lowering the school record by under four seconds. Sophomore Patty Jo English ran the leadoff while senior Sydney Mudgett ran the 400m leg, redshirt freshman Cami Streff ran the 800m and junior Nicolette Schmidt ran the anchor leg. The relay team finished fourth in a close race running talling a time of 11:35.55. The previous school record was set on Feb. 12 in a time of 11:39.08.
Woelber finished the final three events of the heptathlon on Friday placing fifth with a point total of 5,207.
Woelber started the second day of the heptathlon with a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles running a time of 8.72 for 809 points. In the pole vault, he scored 617 points vaulting a height of 13-1.25, placing fifth. He rounded out the multi-event with 778 points in the 1,000m running 2:48.80 finishing in fifth to elevate his point total to 5,207.
Also garnering All-America accolades Friday was senior Mearah Miedema. She earned the honor with a fourth-place finish in the high jump, topping 5-7.75.
Starting the track portion of the championships was senior Austin Miller running in the mile. He ran 4:06.86 to place fourth in the prelims and advance to the mile finals taking place Saturday at 2 p.m.
Miller returned less than an hour later to try and qualify for the finals of the 800m, where he was able to charge down the homestretch to make him two-for-two on qualifying for the finals. He placed fifth in 1:52.12, running the fifth-fastest time of the day in the event.
Miller was the lone athlete to attempt the 800m/mile double at the championships. The finals for Miller will take place at 2:40 p.m. in the 800m.
Two of Augustana's four entries in the women's mile made their way out of the qualifying round with sophomore Patty Jo English and junior Nicolette Schmidt placing fifth and seventh, respectively, advancing to the final slated for a 6 p.m. start tomorrow.
English's time to get in was 4:52.07 and Schmidt's time was 4:53.60. Also competing in the mile were Meagan Schenk and Callin Naddy. Schenk crossed the finishing tape in 4:56.34 and Naddy in 4:58.11 to place 12th and 13th, respectively.
Augustana also saw Lawrence Lokonobei compete in the 60-meter hurdles as he crossed the finishing line in 8.26 seconds, missing out on qualifying for the finals by one position.
