GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 16 Florida State swimming and diving team concluded the 2021 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center by placing 13th in the 400 free relay on Saturday night.
The team sophomore Peter Varjasi, junior Jakub Ksiazek, freshman Mason Herbet and junior Max McCusker clocked a time of 2:50.77, securing the fourth relay All-America honorable mention of the meet.
The Seminoles capped NCAAs by scoring in four of the five relays for the first time since 1999.
“We’re just happy for the guys,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “They did not get to do this last year, so we are grateful for this year. There were so many times I really didn’t think this meet would happen. After all of the issues, it was a great finish and I’m super proud of our guys.”
Varjasi led off the race with a personal best time of 42.46, which ranks fourth in school history. In a close field, Varjasi handed the race off Ksiazek, who kept the Noles in the hunt for the heat victory behind Texas A&M and Purdue.
Herbet took over in the third spot, however the Aggies grew their lead from lane eight when McCusker hit the water.
McCusker, along with the rest of the field, caught the leaders and the heat was dead even heading into the final turn.
McCusker used his underwater kicks in order to get a good push off the wall, pulling out the heat two victory in the final five yards, just off the time (2:50.77) the same four set at the ACC Championships back in February (2:50.74).
In prelims, Varjasi led the Noles in the 100 free, touching with a time of 42.82 for 29th place. McCusker took 49th (43.46) and freshman Yordan Yanchev followed in 50th at 44.18.
Sophomore Nick Vance swam in two races that were just off his personal bests. He first placed 37th in the 200 back with a time of 1:44.62 (1:44.28) before coming back to touch 38th in the 200 fly at 1:45.50 (1:45.28).
Junior Izaak Bastian closed out his NCAAs by placing 36th in the 200 breast at 1:56.50.
Freshman David Quire swam in the heats of the 1650 free, touching with a time of 15:20.97 for 35th place.
Florida State ended the meet in 23rd place with a total of 32.5 points.
