NEW YORK – UConn sophomore guard James Bouknight was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team as the conference announced its all-league teams on Sunday. UConn freshman forward Adama Sanogo was named to the league's All-Freshman Team.
Bouknight, who missed eight of UConn's 17 BIG EAST games while recovering from elbow surgery, was still impressive enough to earn the support of the BIG EAST coaches, who vote for the league's awards. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Bouknight was joined on the First Team by Seton Hall's Sandro Mamukelashvili, Marcus Zegarowski of Creighton, Julian Champagnie, and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Collin Gillespie of Villanova. Due to a tie in the voting an additional place was added.
Bouknight leads UConn in scoring at 20.2 points per game and in conference games at 20.7. He is the leading scorer in the BIG EAST, but has not appeared in enough games to qualify as much, according to league guidelines.
Bouknight led the Huskies in scoring in nine of the 12 games he played and has scored 20-plus in seven games, including a league-best 40-point outburst against Creighton.
He is also averaging 5.6 rebounds, has a field goal percentage of .472 and a free throw percentage of .803.
Bouknight is UConn's 21st selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, as well as having two First-Team picks in the American Athletic Conference. Last season, he was named to the All-American Conference Third Team and was a unanimous selection to the league's All-Rookie Team.
Sanogo has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week twice in the last four weeks. The freshman forward averages 6.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, and those numbers rise to 7.1 and 5.2 in BIG EAST games. His field goal percentage is .553. In his last four games, Sanogo has averaged 9.2 points and 7.0 rebounds.
He is joined on the All-Freshman Team by St. John's Posh Alexander, Marquette's Dawson Garcia, Butler's Chuck Harris, and Xavier's Colby Jones.
Sanogo is UConn's 27th selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, in addition to four All-Rookie Team selections while in the American Athletic Conference.
