and have picked up the patronages of several charities as the Queen started offloading her duties and since Prince Philip retired in 2017. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are likely to see their workload increase the closer they get to the throne but could also choose to tailor their charitable endeavours to match the system they currently have in place. Speaking to Express.co.uk, author Phil Dampier suggested William and Kate may have to "change their attitude" when it comes to charity work.

Mr Dampier, the author of 'Prince Philip: Wise Words and Golden Gaffes,' said: "Between the Queen and Prince Philip, they’ve still got about 1,500 patronages so it’s a hell of a lot.

"Over the last five years or so, Will and Kate, and Harry and Meghan have tended to concentrate on a small number of causes like mental health and the environment and conservation.

"They tended to concentrate, not really taking on…they’ve gone for what you might say was quality rather than quantity. Or things that interest them or things they feel they can make a difference in.

"It’s going to be very interesting to see whether that attitude will have to change a bit."

William and Kate have long been outspoken advocates for better mental health discourse and support several charities focused on mental health debate.

Over the past few years, Her Majesty also entrusted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with an increasing number of charities she used to patron.

In December 2019, the Queen passed on her patronage of Family Action to Kate after serving in the role for over 65 years.

The Duchess of Cambridge had previously taken on roles as patron to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in Wimbledon and has been regularly attending the women's finals since inheriting the role.

As second-in-line to the throne, Prince William has seen his workload expand exponentially through the years, and it's likely the number of engagements he and Kate will have to attend will increase further down the line.

The pair already showed signs of the huge impact they could have in the future as they stepped up to the plate during the coronavirus pandemic.

With the Queen in isolation with Prince Philip at Windsor Castle, and Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall in Scotland for the time being, Kate and William have taken on a large number of virtual duties.

During the lockdown, the Duke of Cambridge concluded the filming of a BBC documentary aimed at improving the debate on mental health called 'Football, Prince William and Mental Health.'

The Duchess of Cambridge earlier this month appeared on This Morning to launch her new photographic project in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery.
