Lana Del Rey has shared a new spoken word piece featuring music by collaborator Jack Antonoff.
The three-and-a-half minute piece, titled “Patent Leather Do-Over,” was released Sunday (May 24) and pays tribute to author/poet Sylvia Plath's classic novel The Bell Jar.
“Sylvia, I knew what you meant when you talked about swimming in the ocean and leaving your patent leather black shoes pointed towards it while you swam," Del Rey says. "It tickled you to leave them there."
“Patent Leather Do-Over" will appear on Behind the Iron Gates -- Insights From an Institution, one of two upcoming spoken word collections. In early April, the songstress shared artwork for another planned spoken word release, titled Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass.
Behind the Iron Gates -- Insights From an Institution is scheduled for release in March 2021, according to an Instagram post. A release date for Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass has not yet been announced.
Last week, Del Rey wrote on social media that her next album, the follow-up to 2019's Norman F---ing Rockwell, will be released on Sept. 5. The post received some backlash after Del Rey compared herself to other famous female artists.
“Question for the culture: Now that Doja Cat, Ariana, Camila, Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f---ing, cheating etc. -- can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money -- or whatever I want -- without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorizing abuse??????” Del Rey wrote.
The singer doubled down on her comments in a follow-up post, clarifying that she wasn't insulting the female artists mentioned and her words had nothing to do with race.
