Baseball Lands Four Former Players on ASUN All-Decade Team - FGCU Athletics

ATLANTA – The ASUN Baseball All-Decade Team is highlighted by four former Eagles, all of whom have been recruited and coached by skipper Dave Tollett, who has been at the helm since the program's inaugural season in 2003.

The players that represent the Green & Blue on the all-decade squad were part of some of the best teams in the program's 18-season history. In addition to accounting for four seasons with at least 30 wins, members of the group combine for a pair of ASUN Pitcher of the Year honors, as many ASUN Player of the Year selections and numerous All-American nods. The contingent is also highlighted by a member of the 2017 team that bested Michigan in the first game of the Chapel Hill Regional and a 2019 MLB World Series ring recipient. All four of FGCU's all-decade representatives were selected in the MLB Draft.

"These were easily some of the best guys that I have ever coached and I am thrilled that they were recognized for something like this," five-time ASUN Coach of the Year Tollett said. "As a team, we talk a lot about culture, our history and the major leaguers that have come through here. This group does not just represent some of the most hard-working and dedicated players that have represented the Green and Blue, but they were also great young men. I hope that our current players look to this group for our team's standards."

The list, which was released by the conference office on Thursday afternoon, features 25 student-athletes from 11 different programs. While three programs placed five members onto the team (Kennesaw State, North Florida and Stetson), FGCU was tied with both Jacksonville and Lipscomb for the second-most spots at four apiece.

Specific criteria was used by the conference office to determine the all-decade team's members. To start off, individuals must have competed for at least two years as an ASUN student-athlete in the decade (2011-20). Individuals that obtained a superlative award (Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year), three all-conference selections, two first team all-conference selections or multiple superlatives immediately qualified. Anyone that received at least two of the following also earned spots: ASUN Tournament MVP, Freshman or Defensive Player of the Year honors or a Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 82 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (No. 24, 2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their sport and have had the highest percentage of teams so honored from these two groups over each of the past three years. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
