Both the men's and women's River Hawk squads were tabbed 2020 All-Academic Teams, while two individual student-athletes from each team were named All-Academic Athletes.
"We are always proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes," said Head Coach Gary Gardner. "This All-Academic award truly rewards the best-of-the-best, since the athletic component required is very stringent. All of our teams had outstanding seasons, so it's great to see them get recognized as true student-athletes."
To receive the team award, all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA squad list for indoor and/or outdoor track & field must hold at least a 3.0 GPA. The UMass Lowell women's track & field team turned in a 3.51 cumulative GPA and the men combined for a 3.16 GPA.
Individually, four River Hawks earned All-Academic Athlete nods. Sophomore middle distance runner Izzy Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) and senior distance runner Kaley Richards (Lowell, Mass.) represented the women's team. Giesing and Richards major in environmental science and public health, respectively. On the men's side, senior Christopher Alfond (Ashby, Mass.), a mechanical engineering major, and Derek Holmes (Marshfield, Mass.), a civil engineering major, also received the accolades.
To be eligible to receive All-Academic Athlete honors, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, and have finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event or in the top 48 in any championship relay event, for the most recent season.
