NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Six men from the University of Michigan track and field team were recognized Thursday (July 16) for their accomplishments in both athletics and academics with All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

All-American Manning Plater led the way for the Wolverines, joined by Roland Amarteifio, Ben Hill, Mason Mahacek, Devin Meyrer and Max Wagner.

Amarteifio, Hill, Meyrer, Plater and Wagner all earned the award for the second-straight season.

Additionally, the men's squad as a whole performed well enough to earn a collective team All-Academic plaudit for the fifth year in a row with a cumulative 3.08 grade-point average under head coaches Jerry Clayton and James Henry.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. The outdoor season annually provides more opportunities to earn the award, but the spring campaign was canceled due to the novel coronavirus COVID-19 global pandemic.

Plater had a breakthrough season in the weight throw while continuing his excellence in the classroom. He earned a bronze medal in the event at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and clinched a berth to the NCAA Indoor Championships for the first time in his career. The championships were subsequently canceled, and All-America honors were awarded to all qualifiers.

Amarteifio was fifth in the Big Ten 60-meter hurdles final, moving to No. 2 on the all-time Michigan list in the event with his performance. He also ran a leg of Michigan's eighth-place 4x400 relay team.

Hill also racked up a fifth-place finish for the Wolverines at the conference meet, with his coming in the mile.

Wagner posted a sixth-place finish in the high jump at Big Ten Indoors, marking the second straight conference meet in which he scored.

Mahacek established a new U-M freshman record in the heptathlon en route to a seventh-place finish in the seven-event competition at Big Tens.

Though Meyrer did not score at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, the cross country All-American had a strong season with fast performances at both 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Nationally, 452 men from 126 different institutions earned the individual award. Michigan was one of 199 programs nationally to earn team All-Academic honors.
