President Trump weighed in on rapper Kanye West’s announcement that he plans to run for president this fall, saying Yeezy simply launched his campaign too late.
Trump told RealClearPolitics in an interview on Tuesday that he’s not sure if West is serious, but that he won’t appear on many state ballots.
“He may. It’s very interesting,” Trump said about West vying against him and Democrat Joe Biden.
“It’d have to be limited to certain states because in some states the deadline has been missed,” Trump said. “If he did it, he would have to view this as a trial run for what’s going to happen in four years.”
On July 4, West tweeted that he will run for president.
“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION” West tweeted.
The musician has not clarified his political plans.
West, married to celebrity clemency advocate Kim Kardashian, famously pounded his fist on the Oval Office’s Resolute Desk during a visit with Trump in 2018. West said favorable things about Trump while wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat.
“I put this hat on, you made me Superman … a Superman cape I can wear,” West told Trump.
