As of the latest climate report from just after midnight Friday, here in Syracuse we have only picked up 25.1 inches of snow so far this season.

For those keeping track, this is over 40 inches below average for this point in the winter.

Looking at just January alone, we have picked up a little over ten inches of snow since the start of the year, but are still running a deficit of about a foot.

The snowfall trends are not the only notable weather statistic so far in 2021 either.

When taking all of the highs and lows that have been recorded so far at the Syracuse airport and averaging them out, we get an output of 31 degrees, or the mean temperature for the month so far.

This mean temperature is over seven degrees above average, which is truly remarkable.

In other words, if January 2021 were to have ended as of this writing, we would have experienced the 12th-warmest January on record.

I know what you’re thinking, and yes, there have indeed been warmer months of January in the past.

Our mean temperature for the warmest January in Syracuse was 37.1 degrees, which was set all the way back in 1932.

So, while the warmth and lack of snowfall are certainly out of the ordinary, they are not completely unprecedented.

Per the latest outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center, it looks like January will be ending on a colder note versus how it has been, with readings near or a little below average.

For the snowfall lovers out there, unfortunately the news continues to not be terribly promising. About average snowfall is expected looking ahead to the end of the month and the start of February.

We will now be looking to see how the averages and snow totals adjust through the remainder of the winter to see how exactly history judges the winter of 2020-21 here in Syracuse. 

But early returns are that this could end on the historically low end of the snowfall spectrum.
