Football Places 16 On All-GNAC Team - WOU Athletics

PORTLAND, Ore. – With a total of 10 being named to the First Team, the Western Oregon University football team had a total of 16 players that were selected to the All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Teams on Wednesday.

Landing on the First Team included Omari Land, Thomas Wright, Jakob Pruitt, Fernando Salazar, Josh McKey, Mack Little, Jaylin Parnell, Curtis Anderson, Joey Sinclair and Andrew Gross. Being named to the Honorable Mention Team was Jarren Ford, Damon Hickok, Jackson Holstad, Machiah Lee, Twister McComas and Ryan Minniti.

Land is on the list for the third straight season, earning Second Team in 2018 and First Team in 2019. Land put together another First Team All-Conference season leading the team in rushing yards with 949 and touchdowns with 10 on 182 carries, averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 94.9 yards per game. He had a long rush of 67 yards. Land caught 14 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Three times he rushed for over 100 yards, reaching a season-high 209 yards at Simon Fraser. He added a big three touchdown game against West Texas A&M, while rushing for 98 yards. Land had a rushing touchdown in seven games. He caught a pass in eight games, with a high of five receptions for 33 yards at Texas A&M-Kingsville. Nationally, Land finishes the season 87th in all-purpose yards per game (103), 31st in rushing touchdowns (10), 35th in rushing yards (945), 27th in rushing yards per game (94.5), 88th in scoring per game (6.6), 91st in total points scored (66) and 50th in total touchdowns (11). 

Wright earns his second straight conference accolade being named to the Honorable Mention Team in 2019. Wright was one of the top deep threats in college football and continually came up with big catches in 2021. He caught 36 passes for 541 yards and four touchdowns, with a long reception of 58 yards. He averaged over 15 yards per reception. Wright caught a pass in all 10 games and had multiple receptions in nine games, hauling in six against Portland State and West Texas A&M. He went for 136 receiving yards at Chadron State and caught two TD passes versus Simon Fraser. Wright had at least 50 receiving yards in five games.

Pruitt is a three-time recipient of the GNAC All-Conference honors earning Second Team in both 2018 and 2019. The four-time GNAC Academic recipient as well played in nine games along the offensive line this season before missing the final game due to injury. After starting at center in 2019, Pruitt moved to tackle this year and also saw some time at center when needed. He helped lead the Wolves to 224 points and 3,510 total yards of offense, with 1,994 coming through the air. WOU recorded 31 total touchdowns on offense, 18 on the ground.

Salazar made a strong impact this year moving into a starting role as the main center. After seeing time in a few games as a redshirt freshman in 2019, Salazar started nine games this year at center, missing only one game due to injury. He helped lead the Wolves to 224 points and 3,510 total yards of offense, with 1,994 coming through the air. WOU recorded 31 total touchdowns on offense, 18 on the ground.

McKey also made a strong impact this year moving into a starting role along the offensive line at guard. Following a redshirt season in 2019, McKey moved into the starting position this year and made an immediate impact for the Wolves. He helped lead the Wolves to 224 points and 3,510 total yards of offense, with 1,994 coming through the air. WOU recorded 31 total touchdowns on offense, 18 on the ground.

Little earns his first GNAC honor this year after putting together a big year along the defensive line/linebacker spot. For the season, Little had 30 tackles (18 solo), along with six tackles for a loss of 27 yards and 2.5 sacks for a loss of 22 yards. He added five quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in nine starts on the season. He posted seven tackles at Chadron State and had five solo tackles on Senior Day against Lincoln, which included three tackles for loss and a sack.

Parnell collects his second straight First Team honor after putting together another all-around season. He started all 10 games at linebacker this season, leading the team in total tackles with 78, including 49 solo, tackles for loss with 17 (67 yards), sacks with 8.5 (51 yards), and two forced fumbles. Parnell also blocked a field goal, tallied three pass breakups and five quarterback hurries. He had four games this season where he posted 10 or more tackles reaching a season-high with 12 at Chadron State. He added six or more solo tackles in five games, reaching a high of seven also against the Eagles. Parnell had a tackle for loss in eight games, with multiple TFL in five games and a high of four against Lincoln (CA). He recorded sacks in five games and had three also against Lincoln (CA). Parnell forced two fumbles and blocked a field goal in the game at Simon Fraser. Parnell finishes the season ranked high nationally in several categories including 72nd in forced fumbles per game (second in GNAC), 25th in sacks per game (led the GNAC), 49th in solo tackles per game (second in the GNAC), 13th in tackles for loss per game (led the GNAC) and 77th in total tackles per game (second in the GNAC). Named to First Team All-GNAC Team in each of the past two seasons.

Anderson earns his third straight First Team honor following another impressive season both on defense and special teams. On defense, he posted 46 tackles, 22 solo, along with seven tackles for a loss of 26 yards, a sack for a loss of six yards, two interceptions, two pass breakups, six quarterback hurries and both a forced fumble and fumble recovery. In the return game, Anderson had 24 kickoff returns for 473 yards, with a long of 38. He posted a season-high 10 tackles against Central Washington, which also included three tackles for loss. He had four other games with at least five tackles and added two tackles for loss with a sack at Chadron State. Anderson ended his career strong with two interceptions in the win over Lincoln (CA). He also added a fumble recovery in the game. On returns, Anderson tallied 96 yards on five returns against Central Washington and had three games with over 50 return yards and five total with over 45 return yards. Anderson finishes the season nationally 48th in combined kick return yards (473), and 75th in kickoff return yards per game (19.7), 

Sinclair earns his second straight First Team honor following another big season. Back in the secondary, Sinclair tallied 49 total tackles, 31 solo, along with a tackle for a loss of seven yards, three interceptions, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He also returned six punts for 55 yards, with a long return of 30 in the season finale against Lincoln (CA). On defense, Sinclair collected a season-high eight tackles against Central Washington and had five games with at least five tackles. Sinclair picked up interceptions against West Texas A&M, Central Washington and Simon Fraser. He finishes the season ranked 73rd nationally in interceptions per game (0.30).

Gross also picked up his second straight First Team honor this year as the main punter. Gross had a big year on special teams, punting 40 times for an average of 39.5 yards, with eight landing inside the 20 and four traveling over 50 yards, including a season-long 65. He averaged over 40 yards in three games, posting a season-high 45.7 average against Simon Fraser. On kickoffs, he had six attempts for an average of 59.7 yards. Gross finishes the season ranked in a tie for 35th nationally in punting average (39.5).

Ford was second on the team in several of the receiving categories this season bringing in 31 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 10.8 yards per catch and had a long reception of 43 yards. He caught a pass in all 10 games, collecting at least four catches in four games and had over 30 receiving yards in five games. Ford went for a season-high seven receptions against Portland State and 73 receiving yards against Chadron State. He caught his touchdown pass against Central Washington.

Hickok was right behind Ford in almost every receiving category catching 23 passes for 328 yards and was second on the team with three touchdowns. He averaged 14.2 yards per catch and had a long reception of 42 yards. Hickok had at least three receptions in six games, going for a season-high four against Portland State and Chadron State. He had a season-high 87 receiving yards against Lincoln (CA) and added touchdowns against Portland State, Simon Fraser and Lincoln (CA).

Holstad served as the main long snapper throughout the season for the Wolves. He helped the special teams unit convert 47 extra points and three field goals, along with helping the team average 36.49 on 43 punts this year.

Lee started all 10 games in the secondary this season coming up with multiple big plays throughout the year. Lee tallied 42 tackles, 26 solo, along with two tackles for a loss of 11 yards, a sack for a loss of eight yards, an interception and led the team with seven pass breakups. Lee recorded a pass breakup in five games, tallying multiple pass breakups against Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M. He had at least five tackles in four games, going for a season-high eight against West Texas A&M. Lee posted two tackles for loss and a sack against Simon Fraser and ended the year with an interception against Lincoln (CA).

McComas completed a strong all-around career for the Wolves this year. In 2021, McComas started all 10 games along the defensive line, coming away with 14 tackles, three solo, 2.5 tackles for a loss of 19 yards, two sacks for a loss of 17 yards and two quarterback hurries. McComas had multiple tackles in four games, reaching a season-high three against Lincoln (CA) and Chadron State. He posted a sack against Simon Fraser and had half-sacks versus Chadron State and Central Washington.

Minniti added another big year in the secondary coming in second on the team in tackles with 57, including 35 solo stops, along with three tackles for a loss of six yards, three pass breakups, and three quarterback hurries in starting all 10 games. Minniti tallied multiple tackles in all 10 games, going for at least five in eight games and reached a season-high 10 against Colorado School of Mines. He added sacks against Simon Fraser, West Texas A&M and Lincoln (CA).

WOU finished the 2021 season 4-6 overall and went 3-1 at McArthur Field with wins over West Texas A&M, Simon Fraser and Lincoln (CA).
