Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has been an outspoken critic of Meghan Markle many times, with his views usually polarizing opinion. But when he said on Monday that he “didn’t believe a word” of what she had said after she told Oprah about her mental health struggles, the reaction was different.
The mental health charity Mind responded with a public statement saying it was “disappointed and concerned” over his comments, adding that it was “vital that when people reach out for support or share their experiences of ill mental health that they are treated with dignity, respect and empathy.” British media regulator Ofcom received more than 40,000 complaints and yesterday afternoon it was announced that Piers was leaving the program with immediate effect.
Now it has emerged that Meghan herself was moved to complain to ITV following Piers’ comments—with those close to her saying this was not because he was critical of her but because she was concerned about how it might affect others coming forward with mental health struggles. T&C understands that Meghan contacted ITV personally and it is the first time she has done so.
This morning, Good Morning Britain went on air with two female presenters—Morgan’s former co-host Susanna Reid alongside Ranvir Singh. Reid described Morgan as an “outspoken, challenging, opinionated, disruptive broadcaster.” On Tuesday, Piers had walked off the set after being criticized by Good Morning Britain’s weatherman Alex Beresford. “I understand that you don’t like Meghan Markle, you’ve made it so clear a number of times on this program,” Beresford said. “Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, but yet you continue to trash her.” Piers then walked off saying “OK, I’m done with this.”
On Tuesday, Piers also attempted to clarity his views on Meghan's words, saying: “It’s not for me to question whether she felt suicidal.”
The Sussexes’ bombshell interview continues to make headlines around the world today, with the Queen’s response yesterday dominating reports. The four-line statement, issued at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, made it clear that the royal family would not be drawn into a war of words. It ended: “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”
