Wilson Earns All-America Honors at NCAA Championships - Northern Illinois University Athletics

ST. LOUIS – Northern Illinois University's Brit Wilson became the NIU wrestling program's 12th Division I All-American with a first-period pin in the Round of 12 in the 2021 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Enterprise Arena Friday night.

Wilson, who was competing against Devin Kane of North Carolina in what is also known in wrestling as the "Blood Round," jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a takedown and four-point nearfall. The Mexico, Mo. native kept at it, eventually recording a pin with two seconds left in the first period.

"He got an outstanding warm up in, he was very ready," NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig said of Wilson. "What really separated him in that match was he was able to get to his ride and just wear on his opponent right away. He found his opportunity and was able to get the fall, which is better.

"Not only to garner All-America status, but to get bonus points for the team. That was just a statement win for him."

The Huskie junior becomes NIU's first All-American since 2004, when Ben Heizer accomplished the feat, also at 184.

"It's been a long time coming," Ludwig said. "We've had plenty of guys in that round, the 'blood round' round of 12 and we came out on the short end of a lot of those matches. We couldn't be prouder of Brit."

Wilson, who suffered a 3-1 setback to Trent Hidlay of N.C. State in his first match of the day, then faced Binghamton's Lou Deprez in his second bout of the night. Wilson jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the second period on a reversal. He then recorded a pair of takedowns and earned the riding time point to defeat Deprez, 7-1 and set up a rematch with Northern Iowa's Parker Keckelsen tomorrow morning.

Keckelsen handed Wilson his only loss before today when the two met in NIU's lone home dual of the season on Feb. 5 in the Convocation Center.

NIU started the day with four wrestlers alive in the competition – Anthony Cheloni (149), Izzak Olejnik (165), Mason Kauffman (174) and Brit Wilson (184)

A first-period takedown proved to be too much to overcome for Cheloni in NIU's first bout of the day. Cheloni, who was facing ninth seed Legend Lamer of Cal Poly in the second round of the consolation bracket, battled, fell behind 3-1 after the first two periods. Starting in the down position to open the third period, Cheloni was able to get his escape and pull to within one, but could not get the takedown and his run in the tournament came to an end.

Olejnik came one win away from All-America status as he battled through a pair of bouts. The Huskie sophomore was taken to overtime in his first match of the day against Austin Yant of Northern Iowa.

Olejnik opened up the match a 2-1 advantage in in the first period with a quick takedown. A second period takedown contributed to a 4-3 lead going into the third period. Olejnik, who started the period in the down position, scored a quick reversal to open up a 6-3 lead. Unfortunately, an escape and takedown in the closing seconds by Yant tied the match a 6-6 to force overtime. Olejnik took the match when he earned a takedown midway through the first overtime.

"We firmly believe Izzak is a contender for All-American honors," he said. "He's a guy that gets better every time he steps on the mat. We thought he had a fantastic tournament."

The Bakersfield, Calif. native battled in his second match of the day, but fell to No. 10 seed Travis Wittlake of Oklahoma State, 7-3.

Kauffman had a tough draw for his second-round consolation match, facing Michigan's No. 5 Logan Massa. Massa raced out to a 10-1 lead through the first two periods, before closing out with four more point in the third for the 14-2 maj. dec victory.

Saturday bouts begin at 10 a.m. CT and fans can watch all the action live via ESPN3. Check @NIUAthletics Twitter account for mat assignments and links to watch or following along on Trackwrestling.
