Staying in the carpool lane while switching freeways helps all motorists - Long Beach Press Telegram

Q. Hi Honk: Can you find out if there is a list of carpool-lane flyovers somewhere? When backups stretch for miles, a sign a mile or so before an interchange is way too close. I have looked online, but no joy. Thanks!

– Greg Adams, Mission Viejo

A. Is congestion as frustrating as the Angels’ starting rotation? The price of gas higher than the apex of a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar skyhook? A fender-bender with a new car as irritating as an injury to Clayton Kershaw?

Yes – of course Honk can find out if such a list exists, and in fact got one from the Orange County Transportation Authority for you, Greg.

Thankfully, what you called flyovers – paths for switching freeways without leaving the carpool lane – are becoming more plentiful.

“One of the major causes of congestion is cars traveling across lanes of traffic,” Joel Zlotnik, a spokesman for that agency, told Honk.

Not only do carpoolers benefit, but so do solo drivers who get to deal with fewer vehicles cutting out of a carpool lane in front of them to get into a regular lane before switching back into a carpool lane on the second freeway.

In Orange County alone, there are two dozen carpool-lane-to-carpool-lane connectors, too many to rattle off here.

Greg, Honk must make you promise to memorize them, or have your co-pilot look them up online while you are behind the wheel. If you agree, you can see the list at Honk’s online home at ocregister.com/tag/honk.

Q. On the northbound 73 toll road, on the bridge over Laguna Canyon Road, workers cut trenches all the way across the highway. They refilled those trenches with asphalt; but those asphalt patches seem way below grade and cause quite a series of successive jolts when you drive over them. Temporary patch until permanent patch brings it to grade level?

– Mike Jasiewicz, Laguna Niguel

A. Correct.

Sheilah Fortenberry, a Caltrans spokeswoman, talked with a member of the agency’s construction unit and relayed that a polyester concrete overlay was added to extend the bridge’s lifespan.

The bridge was grounded down, the overlay was put on top and then it was grounded down again. Mike, you must have gone over the bridge, which is in north Laguna Beach, before the final grinding. According to the inspector’s diary, that final grinding, the bridge’s finishing touch, occurred on Aug. 13.

In all, 20 spots on the 73 will have gone through this process. Tentatively, all of the work is to be completed by Nov. 3.

Smooth travels, Mike.
