NEW YORK – Seton Hall forward Sandro Mamukelashvili and Villanova forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl are unanimous selections to the 2020-21 All-BIG EAST First Team. The conference has released the All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams, Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Team. The league's head coaches choose the all-conference squads and are not permitted to vote for their own players.
The four other All-BIG EAST First Team honorees are: James Bouknight of Connecticut, Marcus Zegarowski of Creighton, Julian Champagnie of St. John's, and Collin Gillespie of Villanova.
The BIG EAST Player of the Year will come from the All-BIG EAST First Team. The conference will announce Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday, March 10. Other league individual awards, including BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player, Sixth Man Award and Sportsmanship Award will be announced Monday morning, March 8.
Mamukelashvili, Seton Hall's versatile 6-11 senior, ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 17.8 average and is sixth in rebounding with a 7.2 mark. He also averaged 3.1 assists.
Villanova's Robinson-Earl is also an all-around contributor. The 6-9 sophomore ranks eighth in scoring with a 15.2 mark and is second in rebounding at 8.4 per game. He ranks 11th in field goal shooting, making 48.3 percent.
Zegarowski has helped Creighton to an 18-7 overall record and a second-place 14-6 BIG EAST mark. The BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, Zegarowski averages 15.4 points, which is seventh in the league, and is fifth in assists with a 4.4 average.
Bouknight was a critical ingredient in UConn's success. The 6-5 sophomore leads the team in scoring with a 20.2 mark. He averages 5.6 rebounds and makes 80.3 percent from the foul line. Bouknight has played only 12 of UConn's 20 games due to a mid-season elbow injury.
Champagnie has been St. John's top-of-the-line scorer, averaging 19.9 points in all games. He is first in free throw shooting, making 88.7 percent. In BIG EAST play, he is the league's scoring champion, averaging 19.5 points. He is the first St. John's player to lead the BIG EAST in scoring since Marcus Hatten in the 2001-02 season.
Gillespie was Villanova's floor general who directed the Wildcats to the regular-season title and the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. Gillespie averaged 14.0 points and ranked third in the league in assists with a 4.6 average. He was injured in Wednesday's victory over Creighton and will miss the rest of the season.
Providence and Xavier each placed two players on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. The Friars are represented by guard David Duke and center Nate Watson. Duke, a 6-7 junior, is averaging 17.2 points and ranks second in the BIG EAST with 4.8 assists. Watson, a 6-10 senior, is averaging 16.8 points and 6.6 rebounds.
Guard Paul Scruggs and forward Zach Freemantle are the Xavier representatives. Scruggs, a 6-4 senior, is averaging 14.2 points and is tops in the BIG EAST in assists at 5.8. The senior is also third in steals with a 1.6 average. Freemantle made the All-Freshman Team last year with a 7.2 scoring average and improved to post a team-leading 16.3-point mark. He leads the BIG EAST in rebounding with a 9.0 average.
Creighton's Damien Jefferson earned second team honors after averaging 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds, while shooting 55.3 percent from the field. The 6-5 senior is also a top-flite defender.
All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention includes three seniors: Denzel Mahoney of Creighton, Jahvon Blair of Georgetown and Jermaine Samuels of Villanova. Mahoney was second in scoring for Creighton, averaging 13.5 points and 4.2 rebounds. Blair, a 6-4 senior guard, leads Georgetown in scoring with a 15.9-point average. Samuels, a 6-7 senior, has been a clutch performer for Villanova. He averages 11.4 points and 6.3 rebounds.
Three players were unanimous picks for the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team. Posh Alexander of St. John's has been the frenetic leader for the Johnnies. The 6-0 guard is averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 assists and a league-leading 2.6 steals. Marquette's Dawson Garcia, a 6-11 forward, has been the BIG EAST's top freshman scorer and rebounder throughout the season. He is averaging 13.2 points and 6.7 rebounds. Butler's Chuck Harris is the team's top scorer with a 12.8 average and ranks third in the league in free throw shooting, making 83.6 percent.
The other All-Freshman Team selections are Adama Sanogo of Connecticut and Colby Jones of Xavier. Sanogo, a 6-9, 240-pound forward, averaged 6.9 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Huskies, while shooting 55.3 percent from the floor. Xavier's Colby Jones is a 6-5 guard who is averaging 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds.
The BIG EAST Freshman of the Year will come from the All-Freshman Team.
