Kelley Named LSWA Offensive Player of the Year; Six Lions Earn All-Louisiana Notice - Southeastern Lions Athletics

HAMMOND, La. –  Southeastern Louisiana senior quarterback Cole Kelley was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Year and was one of six Lions named to the 2020-21 All-Louisiana Football Teams, which were released by the LSWA on Monday.

Two days after winning the Walter Payton Award – the Heisman Trophy of the FCS – as the nation's top offensive player, Kelley was named the state's top offensive player at any level. Kelley is the first SLU player to earn LSWA Offensive Player of the Year honors since Bryan Bennett in 2013.

Kelley was one of three Southeastern representatives on the first team along with junior offensive lineman Jalen Bell and junior defensive back Ferlando Jordan. Lion junior wide receiver CJ Turner, senior offensive lineman Ethan McMullan and senior linebacker Alexis Ramos represented SLU on the second team.

The six All-Louisiana selections were tied for the second-most in program history. Only the 2013 team's nine representatives topped this season's contingent.

Kelley, who was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and earned second team All-Southland honors, earned All-America honors last week from Stats Perform and Associated Press. The Lafayette, Louisiana native's trophy case is rapidly filling due to passing for 300 or more yards in every game – including three games of 400 yards or more.

Kelley threw for a FCS-high 2,662 yards and also led the nation in points responsible for (18 passing touchdowns, seven rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns). In his second season in Hammond after transferring from Arkansas, Kelley ranked among the FCS leaders in passing efficiency, passing touchdowns, passing yards per game, rushing touchdowns, total offense, total touchdowns scored and yards per pass attempt.

Protecting Kelley's blind side was Bell, who started all six games he appeared in at left tackle. An Amory, Mississippi native, Bell earned first team All-Southland Conference honors after leading the team in knockdowns.

Jordan earned All-Louisiana honors for the second straight season after being named to the second team as a sophomore. The Atlanta, Georgia native was named All-American for the second straight season last week after a season that saw him earn his second straight first team All-Southland selection. Jordan picked off a pair of passes, broke up six passes and led FCS with three blocked kicks.

Turner joined Bell and Jordan on the first team All-Southland team last month. The LaPlace, Louisiana product claimed his first All-Louisiana selection after recording 44 catches for 534 yards and five touchdowns in six games played during the spring. Turner ranked fifth in the FCS with 7.3 receptions per game, while also ranking among the nation's top 20 in receiving touchdowns, receiving yards and receiving yards per game.

McMullan made an immediate impact in his first season out of North Alabama, starting all seven games at right guard. The Decatur, Mississippi native was a second team All-Southland selection after grading out over 90 percent four times.

Rounding out the SLU All-Louisiana contingent was Ramos, who has earned second team All-Southland Conference honors in both of his seasons in Hammond. In seven games, the Salinas, California product led the league with 80 tackles and recorded double-digit tackles on five occasions.

Kelley took home one of the state's five individual awards. Defensive linemen Isaiah Chambers of McNeese and Milton Williams of Louisiana Tech shared Defensive Player of the Year honors. Chambers was also named the state's Newcomer of the Year, while LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was tabbed Freshman of the Year. UL Lafayette's Billy Napier earned Coach of the Year honors.

Select media members and the state's sports information directors selected the 2020-21 LSWA All-Louisiana Football Teams.

All six Southeastern All-Louisiana selections will return this fall. SLU's 2021 campaign will open on Sept. 4, when the Lions welcome North Alabama to Strawberry Stadium.
