In order to be eligible for the America East All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.3. In addition, they must have been a significant contributor to their team during the current season. The conference announced that 10 men and 10 women have been chosen to the squads.
"Dan and Aziza continue to represent our program and university at the highest level both athletically and academically," distance coach Annette Acuff said. "They deserve to be recognized by the America East Conference in this way."
Schaffer makes his third consecutive appearance on the Men's America East All-Academic Team. He won the 1,500 at the America East Championships back on May 2 and anchored the first-place 4x800 relay team in that same meet. Last weekend, he clocked a winning time of 3:58.44 in the mile at the Toledo Rocket Invitational, becoming the fourth Binghamton runner in program history to break the four-minute mark in that event. Schaffer currently ranks No. 20 in the East Region with a time of 3:40.44 in the 1,500.
Schaffer is just the fourth Binghamton athlete to be named to the America East Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team three times during their career. He joins Robb Quiller (2010-12), Joe Miceli (2014 & 2016-17) and Jack Fitzgerald (2018-20).
In addition, Schaffer has been named to the America East Cross Country All-Academic Team twice during his career (2018 & 2020) and to the Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team in 2020.
Chigatayeva, meanwhile, makes her first appearance on the America East Women's Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team. She won the 3,000 Steeplechase at the America East Championships on May 1 and her top time in that event (10:15.85) is currently ranked No. 39 in the East Region.
Chigatayeva has also been named to the 2019 and 2020 America East Cross Country All-Academic Teams.
Since the inception of the America East All-Academic Teams in 2006, Binghamton has posted 24 men's selections in outdoor track & field as well as 16 women's honorees.
