Three Selected to the First Team and Three Land on the Second Team; Sharpe Named to the All-Sportsmanship Team
LANCASTER, Pa. – Six Washington College women's lacrosse student-athletes have earned 2021 All-Centennial Conference honors today following a vote by the conference's head coaches. Senior midfielder Anna Bennett (Phoenix, Md./Garrison Forest), senior defender Meghan Dean (Mayo, Md./South River) and junior attacker Colleen Keefe (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) were named to the first team, while senior defender Catherine Keirn (White Hall, Md./Notre Dame Prep), freshman defender/midfielder Abby Laubach (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and sophomore midfielder Ellie Morrall (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton) were tabbed to the second team. Keirn is now a two-time all-conference pick, while Bennett, Dean, Keefe, Laubach and Morrall are all first time recipients. In addition, junior defender/midfielder Molly Sharpe (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) represented the Shorewomen on the conference's All-Sportsmanship Team for the first time.
It is the second time in team history that Washington has had six All-Centennial selections in team history, joining the 2004 squad.
Head coach Kate Fowler was ecstatic about the team tying the record for most All-Centennial picks.
"We are so proud of our All-Centennial performers from the 2021 season!" exclaimed the third-year head coach. "To have a program-record tying six players recognized by the conference is a true testament to the hard work and dedication that all of our players have put in during an incredibly challenging year."
Bennett led the Shorewomen in assists (12), draw controls (40), ground balls (22) and caused turnovers (12) and was second on the team in goals (16), free position goals (7) and points (28) as she started in all eight contests. Through the end of the regular season, she led the Centennial in ground balls and caused turnovers, second in draws and free position scores, fourth in assists and points and seventh in goals. Bennett finished her career with 76 points on 44 goals and 32 assists with 156 draw controls in 45 career contests. Her 156 draws ranks her third all-time in team history.
Dean finished third on the team with 15 ground balls and fourth on the squad in caused turnovers with five as she started in all eight games this season. Through the end of the regular season, she was tied for fourth in ground balls. Dean helped the Shorewomen post their first shutout in four years on March 27 in a 17-0 win at McDaniel. In 40 career games, Dean had 60 ground balls, 27 caused turnovers and one goal.
Keefe led the Shorewomen in goals (33), points (37) and free position goals (8) in starting in all eight contests in 2021 as she set personal-bests in goals and points. Through the end of the regular season, she led the Centennial Conference in goals, points and free position goals. In conference-only games, Keefe led the Centennial in goals (26) and was second in points (29). In 31 career games, she has 75 goals, 83 points and 20 free position scores.
Keirn, who garnered All-Centennial honorable mention two seasons ago, was tied for second on the team with nine caused turnovers and fourth in ground balls with 12 as she started in all eight games this spring. Through the end of the regular season, she was fourth in the Centennial in caused turnovers. In conference-only games, she was tied for seventh in caused turnovers with six. Keirn helped the Shorewomen yield just 15 goas in three Centennial road games where the Shorewomen went 3-0. In 39 career games, she finished with 63 ground balls and 51 caused turnovers.
Laubach had a strong rookie campaign as she was second on the team in draw controls with 34 and added seven goals and two assists for nine points as she started in all eight games in 2021. The freshman, who tied the program record with 11 draws at Ursinus on April 3, is third in the conference in draw controls through the end of the regular season. In Centennial Conference games, she was third in draws with 25. Laubach was tied for fifth through the end of the regular season and in conference-only games with five free position goals. In her final three games, she had six goals and seven points.
Morrall, who played in eight games, earning five starts, had 23 draws and added five goals and four points for nine points. The sophomore also added eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Through the end of the regular season, she was tied for seventh in the CC in draw controls and in conference-only contests she was tied for ninth with 18. In 13 career games, she has five goals and five assists for 10 points, while winning 24 draws.
The Centennial Conference also announced its All-Sportsmanship Team for women's lacrosse and Sharpe was the Shorewomen's representative on that team. Each Centennial Conference member institution was permitted to nominate one student-athlete who exemplifies the best in sportsmanship for the All-Sportsmanship Team. Nominations were submitted by the head coaches. Sharpe had three goals, four points, nine ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers in starting all eight games in 2021.
Since 2011, Washington had 17 first team selections, 16 second team picks and four earn honorable mention recognition for a total of 37 all-conference selections in addition to three coach of the year honors.
The Shorewomen went 5-3 overall this year and 4-2 in the Centennial.
