SJU Baseball Trio Named All-MIAC - Saint John's University Athletics

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Three Saint John's University baseball student-athletes earned 2021 All-MIAC honors on Tuesday, May 18.

Senior pitcher Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori), junior catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) and sophomore designated hitter Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) received All-MIAC distinction. Senior pitcher Luke Zweber (New Prague, Minn.) was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team.

SJU has now had 43 All-MIAC honorees over the last 11 seasons.

Penick made six starts in conference play and posted a 4-0 record with three complete games, a 1.93 ERA, .217 opponent batting average and 33 strikeouts over 42 innings. The ERA was good for fourth in the conference among those with 25 innings pitched or more, as well as his innings pitched. He also finished sixth in wins and seventh in strikeouts. The opposition batted .169 with runners on base and .167 with two outs

Penick is 6-0 with a 2.38 ERA, .200 opponent batting average and 56 strikeouts in a team-leading 64.1 innings overall this season. He is 4-0 with a 1.76 ERA and 40 strikeouts over his last seven starts (51.0 innings).

Roe tied for the league lead with five home runs in MIAC play and batted .329 (27-for-82) with 19 runs scored and 15 RBI. He set SJU's single-season home run record with his 13th May 8 at St. Olaf, four days after he hit for the cycle against Minnesota-Morris. Roe has three multi-homer games, including two of three blasts each, and is batting .338 with 34 RBI, seven stolen bases and a team-leading 25 extra-base hits.

Nyrop started all 25 conference games and led the league in RBI (26) in MIAC play. He also finished second in hits (34), doubles (10) and slugging percentage (.644), and tied for fourth with four homers. His .378 batting average and .443 on-base percentage were team highs, as well as his numbers with runners on base (.423) and runners in scoring position (.419).

Overall, Nyrop leads the Johnnies in batting (.401), hits (57), RBI (48), on-base percentage (.470) and OPS (1.174), and is second in home runs (9) and walks (18). The 48 RBI tie him with Patrick Strey '16 for second-most in an SJU season, four behind Ryan Roder's 52 in 1997.

The Johnnies (29-11, 16-9 MIAC) play host to Bethel (23-15, 14-11 MIAC) in a single-elimination game in the first round of the MIAC Tournament, SJU's 11th consecutive appearance, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Becker Park.
