It’s all about expression: Artworks exhibit highlights geology artists - The Pioneer

BIG RAPIDS — Artworks is currently displaying the work of three statewide known artists.

The pieces come from the Upper Peninsula; photography, sculptures and drawings made from and inspired by rocks.

The Geology Rocks! collection includes pieces from artists Stephen Ross, Autumn Bildson, and Juile Tyslicky.

Ross is a naturalist and nature photographer; his work was gathered over the span of three years. He said he captures the uniqueness of abstract art, geologic exposures of the Upper Peninsula.

“I see patterns more times rather than subjects, so this is how I came up with so many patterns for the show,” Ross said.

Ross’ interest began while attending an abstract art exhibit in 2004. He said he tries to record images that others may pass by.

Ross hopes his images inspire an appreciation for the rocks and geological time and forces that have shaped the Upper Peninsula landforms that we pass by without noticing. He mentions that his pieces include lithoscapes, pareidolias, and mimetoliths.

“The oldest rocks in this collection of the U.P. geologic photographs date from the Neoarchean Epoch of the Precambrian Era about 2.7 billion years ago,” Ross said.

Another featured artist, Autumn Bildson, is a stone carver. For over 20 years she has created art for either for personal use, to sell, or to fit a customer’s personal artistic desire.

Bildson has worked on fireplaces, decorative architectural elements, and sculptures.

She said it’s all about expression.

“So many people don’t have an expressive way to express themselves in a non-detrimental way," Bildson said. "You have you to explore, take a drawing class to learn about composition, value, and colors."

The exhibit’s last featured artist, Julie Tyslicky, has created art of one kind or another in Michigan much of her life. She said her work is all based on rocks.

“I find them in my garden or Lake Superior. My husband and I have a side-by-side buggy,” Tyslicky said. "The compromise is while I ride in the buggy, he stops a few times and I get to pick up rocks on the lake. Then I take them home polish them then place them in a bowl."

Tyslicky said to all upcoming and inspiring artist is to keep practicing there’s no magic pencil, no magic brush, the magic is your desire to want to do it and your practice.

The Geology Rocks exhibit will be available to view now through Aug. 26.

Artworks is located at 106 N. Michigan Ave in downtown Big Rapids.
