Monahan Earns CoSIDA Academic All-American Status - EMU Eagles

AUSTIN, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University baseball senior Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) was tabbed with an incredible honor today, July 29, when he was named to the Academic All-America® Division I baseball team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). 

One of only 33 players nationally, and the only player in the Mid-American Conference, to earn Academic All-American status in 2020-21, Monahan was named to the list as a second teamer. He is just the sixth player in EMU baseball history to earn Academic All-America® distinction, the first since John Rubino was named to the third team in 2015. The Saline, Mich. native is one of only three players in program history to earn first or second team honors.

"Mike's journey from his start as a bench bat to an everyday member of our lineup, to a First Team All-MAC selection and now an Academic All-American is nothing short of spectacular. He is the perfect testament to what hard work, dedication, and perseverance can lead to, and he could not be a better representation of what we want Eastern Michigan baseball to look like as we continue to work towards building champions, on and off the field. The determination he showed to bring value to our team during every step of his journey was unmatched."

Bursting onto the scene as the baseball team's designated hitter in 2021, Monahan set career-highs in virtually every category over his 26 games. He added an impressive 3.74 grade point average in the classroom en route to earning his degree in business management.

 In 22 starts, Monahan belted 28 hits, 26 of which were in May, the most single-month hits for an Eagle since 2019, 14 RBIs, a .451 slugging percentage, and a .386 on-base percentage. The Saline, Mich. native also put together a team-best 13-game hitting streak this season. The senior had his best series of the season at St. Bonaventure, May 1, totaling seven hits and five RBIs, including going 4-for-6 in game one. Monahan also launched his first career home run against Toledo, May 11. 

Of the 33 members of the Academic All-America® Division I baseball team, 31 are first-time selections. Five of the 33 members of the Academic All-America® Division I baseball team boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 12 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.75.
