Orono, Maine – The University of Maine track & field program has announced the addition of three student-athletes, each who have achieved All-American status prior to their arrival in Orono.
Jason Santa Cruz, a transfer from Monmouth, earned New Balance Nationals Outdoor All-American status in the javelin event while in high school at Northern Valley Old Tappan Regional High School in 2019. Santa Cruz, the 2019 New Jersey State Champion in javelin in 2019, also earned First-Team All-Division honors in 2017 and 2019.
Liam Bourassa, who will join the Black Bears as a freshman in the fall of 2021, placed sixth in the javelin at the 2021 high school national meet in Eugene, Ore., with a personal and school record throw of 194-7, to earn his All-American status. Prior to the national competition, Bourassa won the All-State competition while competing for Ayer Shirley High School in Ayer, Mass.
Eamon Sweeney rounds out Maine's trio of incoming All-Americans, capturing the honor while competing in the decathlon at the high school national meet. Sweeney, a recent graduate of Haddam-Killingworth High School in Haddam, Conn., earned All-American honors after placing sixth in the nation for the decathlon at the national meet with 6,445 points at the event hosted at the University of Oregon. Sweeney ended his high school career by earning All-State in both the 300m hurdles and the javelin. His mark of 39.67 in the 300m set a new school record in the event.
