Chandler Jacobs, a Division II All-American and the most coveted non-D1 prospect currently in the NCAA transfer portal, told ESPN that he has committed to play at Texas Tech next season.
"I choose Texas Tech because of the challenge and opportunity it presents with the coaches leading the charge," Jacobs wrote in a text message. "I believe God will use this new challenge to pull something out of me and develop me like no other. I trust Him, I believe He has prepared me and called me to this challenge, I just need to answer the call."
Jacobs said he picked Texas Tech from a list of schools that included California, Vanderbilt, Wyoming, Colorado State and Grand Canyon.
Jacobs is coming off a stellar year at Dallas Baptist University, averaging 20.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 45% from 3-point range. He was named Lone Star Conference defensive player of the year and academic player of the year.
Jacobs played four years at Dallas Baptist, where he is the school's all-time leading scorer, and will graduate next month. He will take advantage of the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted all winter sports athletes and play a fifth season as a grad transfer at Texas Tech.
He joins a wave of Division II standouts who will be making the transition to the highest levels of college basketball, joining Cam Martin (Kansas), Parker Fox (Minnesota) and Qua Grant (Wichita State). D2 Player of the year and national champion Trevor Hudgins told ESPN he will be returning to Northwest Missouri State last week.
Texas Tech promoted assistant Mark Adams to its head coaching position after Chris Beard elected to replace Shaka Smart at Texas last month.
The Red Raiders lost virtually their entire backcourt this offseason with Mac McClung, Kyler Edwards, Micah Peavy and Terrence Shannon entering the transfer portal or declaring for the NBA draft. McDonald's All-American guard Nimari Burnett left at semester break and recently announced he's transferring to Alabama.
