Rockies right-hander Jon Gray doesn’t know much about the politics of the matter, but he wouldn’t mind seeing baseball’s Midsummer Classic at Coors Field this summer.
“The Home Run Derby would be pretty legendary,” Gray said Friday.
The possibility of Denver hosting the 2021 All-Star Game emerged Friday when Major League Baseball announced it is moving the game out of Atlanta in response to a new Georgia law that has civil rights groups concerned legislation could restrict voting access for people of color. The 2021 MLB draft, a new addition to All-Star Game festivities this year, also will be moved from Atlanta.
“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.
“Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box.”
Shelby Wieman, a spokeswoman for Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a big Rockies fan, said Polis would love to see the All-Star Game return to Coors Field.
“The Governor knows that Colorado is the best home for the All-Star Game, especially because Colorado also has strong laws that enable voters to cast their legal ballots any way they choose including through mail or in person,” Wieman said. “The Governor will be burning up the phones the next few days to see if there is an opening to bring the All-Star game to Denver.”
Mayor Michael Hancock would also welcome the chance for the event to come to LoDo, said Theresa Marchetta, director of strategic communications and media policy for Denver’s mayor.
“While the Mayor hasn’t personally reached out to Commissioner Manfred on this yet since it was just made public, with our history of hosting these types of major sporting events, Denver and Coors Field would be a natural fit,” Marchetta said. “We will follow the lead of our MLB team, the Colorado Rockies, in consideration of hosting the All-Star Game.”
Denver last hosted the All-Star Game on July 7, 1998, at Coors Field as the American League beat the National League 13-8.
