VanLiew, Axner Named First Team All-District by CoSIDA - FGCU Athletics

FORT MYERS, Fla. --- For the first time in program history, the FGCU volleyball program has placed two student-athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team as Cortney VanLiew and Dana Axner both earned first team recognition.

VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) and Axner (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) were each one of 13 members of the District 4 First Team, which is comprised of student-athletes from schools in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Both of them will now be considered for the Academic All-American team that will be announced in early July.

"Dana and Cortney continue to demonstrate their commitment to academics, and the CoSIDA recognition is a wonderful honor highlighting those efforts," FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. "Seeing how these two balance the rigors of sport and academia is impressive and inspiring. They truly pour all of themselves into each of those arenas, and their successes are the result of a lot of hard work and dedication."

VanLiew, a senior outside hitter who recently became one of just two three-time ASUN All-Academic team selections in FGCU volleyball history, has compiled a 3.678 cumulative GPA in her undergraduate career, where she is majoring in accounting with a Spanish minor. She is a one-time President's List selection, a three-time Dean's List selection and a four-time AD's Honor Roll selection. On top of that, she becomes the program's first two-time CoSIDA All-Academic Team selection.

This spring, VanLiew compiled 221 kills, or 3.75 per set, while adding 140 digs, 22 blocks and nine aces. She was twice-selected as the ASUN's player of the week, pushing her career total to seven, which is tied for the third-most in conference history. She also added five double-doubles, which increases her career total to 25. In all, she had 10+ kills in 11 matches this year, including six with 15+ and two with 20+ kills, 12+ digs and 2+ blocks. She registered a career-high 30 kills vs USF on Jan. 29 and ranked among the national leaders this year in kills, total attacks, points per set, kills per set and attacks per set. She will return for her graduate year next season 50 kills shy of breaking the program's all-time record, while also sitting 10th in ASUN history.

Axner, the two-time ASUN defensive player of the year who recently earned her first career ASUN All-Academic team honor, carries a 3.909 cumulative GPA. She has landed on the President's List twice, while earning Dean's List and AD's Honor Roll credentials five times each. The secondary mathematics major finished second in the conference in total digs (270) and third in digs per set (4.58). Her 15 aces was 10th-best in the ASUN, and she finished 14th in assists with 56 and 15th in assists per set at 0.95. Overall, she had 10+ digs in all but two matches, including eight with 15+ in conference play alone. She posted 21 digs in the ASUN championship matches while also registering six matches with five+ assists this year. The Ohio native currently ranks 17th in ASUN history with 1,468 career digs, as well as fourth in career digs per set. She finished this year ranked 89th nationally in digs per set and 111th in total digs.

While VanLiew enjoys her second selection, Axner joins other one-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selections Amanda Carroll (2017, First Team), Gigi Meyer (2012, First Team) and Brooke Youngquist (2010, Second Team).

COACH BOTSFORD
Matt Botsford recently completed his seventh season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2019 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 157-53 (.749) record overall, including an 81-19 (.810) record in ASUN play. Including 2019, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in five straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play six straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The next two, which saw .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship and now the team has won two straight regular season titles. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. Last year, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power-5 win, and the Eagles followed that up with a straight-set win over the Hurricanes at a neutral site in 2019.
