ROSEMONT, Ill. – No fewer than 27 student-athletes (15 men, 12 women) from seven Big Ten Conference schools earned a place on the 2020-21 Division I Academic All-District At-Large Teams, according to Thursday’s announcement by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Big Ten student-athletes chosen for the honor compete in 11 different sports (nine that are sponsored by the conference), and all are now eligible for Academic All-America status, with those selections made in early August.
Minnesota led all Big Ten schools with eight Academic All-District At-Large honorees, followed by Michigan (6) and Purdue (4).
Big Ten men’s gymnastics and women’s swimming & diving programs had a conference-high four Academic All-District honorees apiece, while women’s gymnastics, men’s ice hockey, men’s swimming & diving and wrestling each had three selections.
Of the 27 Big Ten student-athletes who received Academic All-District At-Large mention, 20 had been named 2020-21 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars last week.
Schools may nominate up to four male and four female student-athletes who compete in the 26 sports covered by the Academic All-District At-Large program, and which do not have a separate designated Academic All-District (and Academic All-America) program. Honorees are recognized in four divisions (NCAA I, II and III, and NAIA) with schools divided among eight geographical districts in the United States and Canada.
To qualify for Academic All-District status, a student-athlete must have completed at least one year at his/her current institutions and achieved sophomore athletic eligibility, maintained a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team, having participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions during the given season.
