Padres trade for Pirates All-Star Adam Frazier: Source - The Athletic

How do the Pirates replace his bat?

Stephen J. Nesbitt, senior writer: Well, they don’t. Not for now, anyway. Frazier, who ran hot and cold at the plate in the past, has been one of the best hitters in the league this season. His batting average hasn’t dipped below .320 since May 15.

The Pirates won’t get that All-Star production from any other infielders currently waiting in line, but this will free up at-bats for a few of them — Wilmer Difo has played some second base; Rodolfo Castro and Cole Tucker have spent most of this season in the minors. For now, though, Bryan Reynolds is the only proven threat in the Pirates lineup.

How Frazier's versatility impacts the Padres

Nesbitt: A two-time Gold Glove finalist at second, Frazier opens up several options defensively for San Diego. He has played every outfield position, plus a few starts at third base and one at shortstop in the majors.

The Padres already have a 2021 All-Star second baseman, of course, in Jake Cronenworth. In all likelihood, Frazier will start at second base when Cronenworth plays first — either spelling or eventually replacing Eric Hosmer in the lineup — while also appearing occasionally in the corner outfield spots.

Who's next to be traded for the Pirates?

Rob Biertempfel, Pirates beat writer: Frazier was their biggest chip, but general manager Ben Cherington likely is not done. The only players who appear to be off-limits are third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes and Reynolds.

The most likely player to go next is left-hander Tyler Anderson (5-8, 4.35 ERA, 1.20 WHIP), a veteran innings-eater who could boost the back end of a contender’s rotation. Righty Chad Kuhl (3-5, 4.38 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) can be used as a back-end starter or in the bullpen and is under team control through next season. Richard Rodríguez (2.82 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 14 saves) was a superb set-up man before becoming the closer by default last summer. Lefty reliever Chasen Shreve (2.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) has made six straight scoreless appearances.
