HAMMOND, La. – Walter Payton Award winner and Southeastern Louisiana senior quarterback Cole Kelley continues to pack his trophy case with postseason accolades, as he was named to the Hero Sports FCS All-America Team, which was announced on Wednesday.
Kelley, who received the Payton Award – the Heisman Trophy of the FCS – as the nation's best offensive player on Saturday, claims his fourth All-America selection, as he was previously placed on the Stats Perform, Associated Press and Athlon Sports All-America teams.
The Lafayette, Louisiana native was also named the LSWA and Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Kelley was also on the All-Louisiana (first team) and All-Southland (second team) squads.
Kelley finished his first season as a starter with an impressive 2,662 passing yards and 18 passing touchdowns, while throwing just four interceptions. He also rushed for seven touchdowns and caught two more scores.
His most impressive trait was his consistency, as he topped 300 yards passing in all seven games, including three games of 400 or more yards passing. Kelley led a SLU offense that finished in the FCS top 10 in passing offense (391.9 ypg, 2nd), scoring offense (39.6 ppg, 6th), total offense (508.6 ypg, 7th), first downs (197, 6th), pass efficiency (162.93, 2nd), third-down conversion percentage (51.9, 6th), fourth-down conversion percentage (75.0, 6th) and red zone offense (92.9, 9th).
Kelley was one of nine Southland Conference players to earn All-America recognition from Hero Sports. He was joined by Sam Houston quarterback Eric Schmid, Nicholls offensive lineman P.J. Burkhalter, Central Arkansas wide receiver Tyler Hudson, McNeese defensive lineman Isaiah Chambers, SHSU defensive lineman Joseph Wallace, UCA defensive back Robert Rochell and Sam Houston defensive back Zyon McCollum. Sam Houston's Jequez Ezzard earned a spot on the team at wide receiver and punt returner.
Kelley will return for the Lions' upcoming fall season, which opens on Sept. 4 when SLU hosts North Alabama in Strawberry Stadium.
