SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Shortstop Brooks Lee is Cal Poly's first All-American in baseball since the 2018 season.
Honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper with a spot on the first team, the redshirt freshman hit a team-leading .342 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs, also breaking the school single-season record for doubles with 27.
Cal Poly's last All-American was outfielder Alex McKenna three years ago, a third-team selection by Collegiate Baseball. The last first-team All-American Mustang was pitcher Casey Bloomquist by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2014.
Lee, the first Mustang to be named to the All-American first team by Collegiate Baseball in Cal Poly's 27 Division I seasons, earned three honors from the Big West Conference on Wednesday.
The 2019 San Luis Obispo High School graduate was selected Co-Field Player of the Year and Co-Freshman Field Player of the Year by the conference's 11 head coaches and also became the 54th Mustang to earn a spot on the All-Big West First Team.
A semifinalist for the Golden Spikes (player of the year) and Brooks Wallace (shortstop of the year) awards and a three-time Big West Field Player of the Week selection this season, Lee led the team in hits (76), triples (3), home runs (10), total bases (139) and sacrifice flies (8). His 27 doubles is tied for fifth place in the Big West record book.
This season, he was first in the Big West in doubles, slugging percentage, RBIs, sacrifice flies and total bases, third in home runs and hits, sixth in runs scored and ninth in batting average and ranks No. 2 nationally in doubles and sacrifice flies, 16th in total bases, 33rd in RBIs and 36th in hits.
Lee claimed back-to-back Big West Player of the Week awards in March after going 7-for-12 against Utah Valley and 7-for-14 versus UCLA, driving in 14 runs in the two series, and earned his third after the Cal State Fullerton series four weeks ago (9-for-18, four doubles, grand slam, five runs scored, seven RBIs).
He produced hitting streaks of 12 games (stopped by UC Irvine), 11 games (snapped by Hawai'i) and nine games (halted by CSUN) this season and compiled a team-leading 25 multiple-hit games and 16 multiple-RBI contests (most in the Big West).
The 17-man Collegiate Baseball All-American first team features 12 conference players or pitchers of the year. The seven-man pitching staff posted a combined 1.91 ERA with six pitchers who struck out more than 100 batters each, led by right-hander Nicholas Sinacola of Maine with 139.
Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Year is Arkansas closer Kevin Kopps, who was 10-0 with 10 saves and a 0.81 ERA with 105 strikeouts and just 15 walks over 66 1/3 innings.
Lee is joined by Long Beach State right-hander Johnathan Lavallee (8-1, 1.89 ERA).
Second-team All-Americans include southpaw Rodney Boone (10-4, 2.20 ERA) of UC Santa Barbara and outfielder Mike Peabody (.353, eight home runs, 54 RBIs) of UC Irvine.
The third team includes right-hander Michael McGreevy (9-1, 2.92 ERA) and shortstop Jordan Sprinkle (.358, seven home runs, 30 RBIs), both from UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine outfielder Nathan Church (.355, three home runs, 47 RBIs).
