"Kam had a great year on and off the field," said head coach Mike Kunigonis. "He is very deserving of this award. We're excited for him all he has accomplished as a Huskie."
Smith is the first Huskie to earn All-Region honors since 2011, when shortstop Alex Jones was named to the Mideast All-Region First Team and designated hitter Jeff Zimmerman was selected to the Mideast All-Region Second Team.
The redshirt-junior was one of two NIU players this season to start all 54 games, showing his versatility by playing first base, third base, designated hitter and the outfield. He led the Mid-American Conference with 72 hits and finished tied for second in home runs with 10 on his way to being named Second Team All-MAC. Smith is the first Huskie since Zimmerman in 2011 to have double-digit home runs in a season. He led NIU with a .360 batting average and a .560 slugging percentage, which was fourth-best in the league.
Smith had a hit in 24 of the first 26 games of the season, including a 15-game hitting streak from March 20-April 17. He drove in a season-high four runs in NIU's 11-2 win over Akron on May 1 to sweep a doubleheader. On April 24 at Ball State Smith tied a career-high with four hits against the Cardinals.
With his selection to the Midwest All-Region First Team, Smith is now eligible for ABCA All-America honors which will be announced on Saturday.
