Masai crossed the finish line in tonight's 5000m race with a time of 13:24.68, a new personal-best time for the Kenyan-born distance runner. He earned Second Team All-America honors with his 10th-place finish, the second All-America finish of the week for Masai. He ran Wednesday's 10,000m race at a 27:45.19 clip to finish as a First Team All-American.
Like he did on Wednesday, Masai started off tonight's race near the back of the field. He narrowly avoided becoming tangled up in a fall by Indiana's Ben Veatch and began to make his moves into the middle of the pack. Masai claimed the fastest split times at 2200m and 2600m, running the 2200m split at 1:04.69 and the 2600m at 1:04.84.
As the race neared the halfway point, Masai made his move on the outside lane towards the front of the pack thanks to those fast split times. He was among the top eight of the race for the next two splits and even briefly threatened the race leaders before dropping back. Masai would finish the race narrowly behind NC State's Ian Shanklin but ahead of Notre Dame's Dylan Jacobs.
Masai concludes his illustrious collegiate running career as one of the all-time greatest cross country/track athletes in Hofstra history. In addition to his two All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, was named an All-American in the 2019 indoor track season and in the 2020 cross country season. Masai was also a two-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Athlete of the Year twice; once during the 2019 cross country season, and once more during the 2021 outdoor track season.
