Phillies stars J.T. Realmuto and Zack Wheeler might start in the All-Star Game.
The stars just may literally align for the Philadelphia Phillies come Tuesday, as the American League and National League All-Stars square off in the 91st Major League Baseball All-Star Game Coors Field in Denver.
For the first time since 2013, multiple players are set to represent the Phillies — starting pitcher Zack Wheeler and catcher J.T. Realmuto. They were named All-Stars last week, but it didn’t seem possible that either, let alone both, could end up starting in the Midsummer Classic. Now, there is a good chance National League manager Dave Roberts, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, makes that happen.
New York Mets ace and perennial Cy Young candidate, Jacob deGrom, recently opted out of the All-Star Game. Further, Brandon Woodruff (Milwaukee Brewers) and Kevin Gausman (San Francisco Giants) are scheduled to pitch Sunday and therefore would not be available to pitch just two days later. Meanwhile, Buster Posey (Giants) is injured with a left thumb contusion and will not attend the festivities in Colorado. The only other catcher currently on the National League All-Star roster is Realmuto.
Phillies All-Star Starters Since 1993
- 2014: Chase Utley, 2B
- 2011: Roy Halladay, P
- 2010: Ryan Howard, DH
- 2009: Chase Utley, 2B; Raul Ibanez, LF; and Shane Victorino, CF
- 2008: Chase Utley, 2B
- 2007: Chase Utley, 2B
- 2006: Chase Utley, 2B
- 2005: Bobby Abreu, RF
- 2002: Scott Rolen, 3B; and Jimmy Rollins, SS
- 1999: Curt Schilling, P
- 1995: Lenny Dykstra, CF
- 1994: Mariano Duncan, 2B
- 1993: Terry Mulholland, P; Darren Daulton, C; and John Kruk, 1B
If both Wheeler and Realmuto end up starting on Tuesday, it would mark the first starting All-Star battery featuring two Phillies players since Terry Mulholland and Darren Daulton in 1993. The only other such All-Star Game battery in Phillies history was Steve Carlton and Bob Boone in 1979.
The Phillies have not had multiple All-Star starters overall since 2009, when Chase Utley (second base), Raul Ibanez (left field), and Shane Victorino (centerfield) appeared at Busch Stadium.
