"As a coaching staff, we have landed another Bronco that has shown his high level game in the JUCO world before coming to Boise," said Widen. "Ryo plays with tenacity and has big goals with his tennis. He will be one of three transfer student-athletes joining us and we can't wait to get to work with him. His dedication in the classroom and on the court, as well as raw talent, will be an important piece of our group looking to do big things in the next few years."
This past spring, Minakata helped the Tyler JC Apache to their third NJCAA Division I national championship in the last four years — there was no tournament in 2020. He also managed to win two national championships taking the NJCAA Flight Three singles title and the Flight Two doubles championship with Alan Magadan, earning All-American status in both as a result.
This past spring Minakata went undefeated in singles going 18-0 overall on his way to the NJCAA Flight Three national championship. In doubles, he went a combined 16-3 with three different partners, but went 12-1 with Magadan on their way to claiming the NJCAA Flight Two national championship. He finished spring 2021 ranked 18th nationally in NJCAA Division I for singles and ninth in doubles with Magadan.
As a freshman in fall of 2019, Minakata and doubles partner Matthew Beecher were finalists at the ITA Regional Championships and placed fifth at the ITA Cup.
In junior tennis, Minakata claimed both the 2017 and 2018 Big Island (Hawaii) Interscholastic Federation Individual Championship in singles. He also won the doubles titles at the 2016 and 2017 ITA Grade 5 Noumea New Caledonia Tournament.
