Cornelius, a 6-2 returning center, was named to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team by the league coaches.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native was third on the team in scoring and led Chattanooga five times. She was UTC's top rebounder 12 times, had a team-best 8.4 boards per game and was third in the SoCon. Cornelius had a team-best 44 blocked shots, was second in the SoCon and ranked 40th in the NCAA. She also was second for Chattanooga in assists with 58.
Last season Cornelius was named to the SoCon Coaches All-Conference Second Team and the league's All-Defensive Team. She also earned all-conference honors from the Southern Conference Sports Media Association who named her to the Second Team.
Cornelius has made 57 starts in 80 games for Chattanooga and is one of four returning starters this season.
Mercer and Samford led the way with three selections to the 10-person preseason team. Furman, UNCG and Wofford joined the Mocs with one each.
Samford's Andrea Cournoyer led the voting as the preseason favorite for Player of the Year.
PRESEASON SOUTHERN CONFERENCE POLLS
The Chattanooga women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference by the league coaches and third by the SoCon media with one first place vote.
Chattanooga received 24 points in the coaches' poll behind Wofford (3rd – 34) and Furman (4th – 30). Mercer received five first place votes and led the way with 47 points, edging SoCon champion Samford who had 45 points and three first place votes.
UNCG was sixth with 19 points followed by East Tennessee State (18) and Western Carolina with seven points.
In the SCSMA poll, Chattanooga received one first place vote of a possible 16 with 85 points. Mercer, the SoCon Tournament champions, received eight first place votes for a total of 117 points followed by Samford with 109 points and six votes for first. ETSU received the final first place vote and finished seventh in the poll with 37 points.
SoCon Tournament runner-up Wofford finished fourth behind UTC in the poll with 73 points followed by Furman (65), UNCG (59), ETSU (37) and Western Carolina with 31 points.
The season tips off Tuesday, November 9 at home against Belmont. Fans will have a chance to see the Mocs on November 5 in an exhibition against Georgia College at the Roundhouse.
