Softball Lands Nine Student-Athletes On Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete Awards - WOU Athletics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – It was a strong showing in the classroom this past year for the Western Oregon University softball team with nine players being named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/Easton Scholar-Athlete list.

Honorees to the All-America Scholar-Athlete program must attain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better and must be nominated by an NFCA member coach.

Allyson Drury once again led the team with the top GPA at 3.97. Natalie Willoughby had a strong first year with the Wolves posting a 3.86 GPA. Aleya Turner concluded her career with a 3.80 GPA. Hannah Stewart also had a strong first year in the classroom posting a 3.71 GPA. Logan Carlos earned the honor with a solid 3.63 GPA. Sophie Franklin was right behind in her first season with the Wolves posting a 3.60 GPA. Sage Barnes transferred in and put together a 3.56 GPA in her first season at WOU. Chandler Bishop also finished her career with the Wolves in style adding a 3.53 GPA. Zoie Recolan tied Bishop also holding a 3.53 GPA.  

Drury started all 31 games this past season in the outfield, tallying 16 hits, two home runs and six RBI. She also added a pair of steals and eight walks. Willoughby played in nine games as a true freshman in 2021, as the catcher tallied two runs scored and had 27 putouts and two assists behind the plate. Turner had the second-best average on the team hitting .354 with 29 hits, three doubles, a home run and five RBI. She also added 12 runs scored and a steal in 24 games. Stewart played right away as a true freshman seeing time in 22 games, coming away with nine hits, two doubles and four RBI. She also added a team-high three steals. Carlos played in 28 games this past season at second base, recording 21 hits, four doubles, a home run and seven RBI to end up hitting .288. Franklin saw time in 20 games as a true freshman this season, tallying nine runs scored and an RBI. Barnes played in four games in her first season with the Wolves. Bishop led the Wolves in hitting with a .357 average, along with team-highs in home runs with seven and RBI with 22. She also scored 13 runs and had 13 walks. In the circle, the right-hander pitched in seven games, picking up a win and two complete games in 32 innings. Recolan played in 23 games at first base and designated player, coming away with 17 hits, three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI.

WOU went 14-17 during the 2021 season and 9-11 in GNAC play. The Wolves hosted the GNAC Tournament and after nearly upsetting Northwest Nazarene in the opening round, came back to defeat Saint Martin's before being eliminated by the Nighthawks in the second meeting. Head coach Lonny Sargent became the all-time winningest coach in program history with a win against Central Washington on Apr. 29 picking up his 227 victory at WOU.
