PORTLAND, Ore. – For the third straight time, the Western Oregon University women's soccer team has had a dozen student-athletes recognized on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Teams, Presented by Barnes & Noble College.
On this year's team, Erika Gonzalez Moreno, Hannah Rispler, Chloe Smith and Emily Wheeler earn the honor for the second time in their careers. Gabby Pulliam holds the highest GPA at 3.94, with Liz Parker right behind with a 3.92 GPA. Also on the Academic Team this year includes Camille Darland, Emilia Kling, Piper Matson, Campbell Neste, Lilly Nowatzke and Holly Schmitz.
Gonzalez Moreno holds a 3.69 GPA and is majoring in education. The sophomore midfielder/defender from Hillsboro, Ore., has played the third-most minutes on the team this year at 793 in starting all 10 games this year. Gonzalez Moreno has a pair of assists, five shots (two on goal) and has helped the team to three shutouts. Five times this season she has played at least 90 minutes, going 110 minutes last time out against Northwest Nazarene. Gonzalez Moreno picked up both of her assists in the 3-0 win at Central Washington.
Rispler holds a 3.86 GPA and is majoring in education. The sophomore defender from Gresham, Ore., has started all 10 games along the back row and has played the most minutes this season on the team at 929. She tallied an assist in the road game at Colorado Mesa and has six total shots, with two landing on goal. Rispler has been part of the three shutouts this year and has played at least 90 minutes in eight games, including all 110 minutes in the ties against Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene.
Smith holds a 3.65 GPA and is majoring in business. The sophomore forward from Portland, Ore., has started all 10 games this season and has logged 787 minutes. She leads the team in assists with four and in shots with 26, landing 11 on goal. Smith has played at least 80 minutes in five games and has at least two shots in every game this year, going for a season-high four at Saint Martin's. She picked up two assists last time out in the tie at Northwest Nazarene and also has helpers against Seattle Pacific and Humboldt State.
Wheeler holds a 3.80 GPA and is majoring in criminal justice. The sophomore goalie from Roseburg, Ore., has played in six total games this season, including starting the past four games. Wheeler has 21 saves, an 84 percent save percentage and is 2-0-2 in the games she has started this year. She posted four saves in the 1-0 shutout overtime win against Seattle Pacific and added three saves in the 3-0 shutout win over Central Washington. Last time out, Wheeler tallied a season-high six saves in helping WOU to the 2-2 draw at Northwest Nazarene.
Pulliam holds the highest GPA at 3.94 and has yet to declare a major. The freshman forward from Fairview, Ore., has played in eight games this year, including seven starts. She has tallied 515 minutes and six shots (all landing on target). In four games this season, Pulliam has played at least 70 minutes, going for a season-high 97 against Montana State Billings. She has a shot in four games this year, registering two against both Western Colorado and Northwest Nazarene.
Parker is right behind Pulliam in terms of having the top GPA on the team at 3.92 and is majoring in education. The freshman midfielder from Camas, Wash., has played in all 10 games this season that has included nine starts. She has accumulated 685 minutes on the field, a goal and eight shots (five on target). Parker has played at least 60 minutes in seven games this year, including all 110 minutes against Montana State Billings. She recorded her goal against Central Washington in the 3-0 shutout victory and has been a part of all three shutouts this season.
Darland holds a 3.81 GPA and is majoring in biology. The freshman defender from Vancouver, Wash., has played in all 10 games this season including six starts. She has logged 512 minutes and five shots (three on goal). Darland has played at least 90 minutes in four games, going all 110 minutes against Montana State Billings. She has been a part of all three shutouts this season and has shots against Montana State Billings, Seattle Pacific, Western Colorado, Western Washington and Central Washington.
Kling holds a 3.77 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. The freshman defender from Santa Barbara, Calif., has seen time in seven games this season that includes a start. She has logged 166 minutes on the field this season. Kling was a part of the shutouts against Humboldt State and Central Washington and played all 90 minutes in the game at Western Washington.
Matson holds a 3.60 GPA and is majoring in education. The freshman forward/midfielder from Eugene, Ore., has started eight games this season and seen a total of 698 minutes on the field. She leads the team in points with seven and is tied for the team lead in goals with Jada Foster at three. Overall, Matson has 12 shots, with seven landing on goal. She has played at least 85 minutes in six games, playing all 110 minutes against both Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene. Matson tallied goals against Montana State Billings, Western Washington and Central Washington and an assist versus Humboldt State. She has multiple shots in four games, tallying three in a game against both Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington.
Neste holds a 3.26 GPA and is majoring in business. The freshman forward/midfielder from Renton, Wash., hasn't seen any action this season so far.
Nowatzke holds a 3.49 GPA and is majoring in business. The freshman forward from Shoreview, Minn., has played in seven games this season that includes a start. She has played in 360 minutes this year, coming away with a goal and seven shots (two on goal). She has played at least 40 minutes in six games this season, going for a season-high 95 minutes against Montana State Billings. Nowatzke's goal this season was a big one, as it was the golden goal to defeat nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific 1-0 in overtime. She tallied three shots in that game and added another three-shot game against Western Washington.
Schmitz holds a 3.47 GPA and is majoring in biology. The freshman defender from Vancouver, Wash., has played in eight games this season including five starts. She has logged 560 minutes and a shot on goal. She has played at least 60 minutes in six games this season, including a season-high 92 minutes against Northwest Nazarene. Schmitz has been a part of shutouts against Humboldt State and Central Washington this season and tallied a shot against Western Washington.
WOU is 3-5-2 overall this season and 2-2-2 in GNAC play. They begin a four-match homestand this Thursday against Simon Fraser starting at 2 p.m.
